Description
Established in 1719, Belhaven is Scotland’s oldest working brewery. With abundant local barley, fine water from the brewery well and access to markets up and down the coast, Belhaven was the perfect place for a brewery back then, and it still is today. In 1719, Dunbar market gardener John Johnstone erected a brewery close to Belhaven Bay and founded a brewing dynasty which was to last for 250 years and a brewery which would last much longer. The brewery and maltings persevered through the wars and upheavals of the early 20th Century and was eventually sold by John Johnstone’s descendants in 1972. In 2005 is was taken over by Greene King who kept the Brewery open in Scotland.

bottle - Pours clear amber with a moderate head that quickly fades to very thin and creamy with a little lacing. The aroma is malty and distinct. The flavor is of caramel malts and a hint of dark fruit with a lightly carbonated, medium bodied mouthfeel. Hops presence is minimal. The finish is sweet.

500ml bottle at Blå Rock Cafe in Tromsø. Deep amber colour. Small tan head. Slightly hoppy aroma. Carbonation is too much present. Medium caramel and honey in a rather straightforwardly flavour.

Bottled. Clear, golden to copper beer with a medium, off-white head. Rich, malty aroma with some smokiness. Creamy mouthfeel and a malty, caramel flavor with too much smoke in it. Normally, smoke is ok, but this smoke feels like when you get out of bed the morning after a large party with lots of smokers present. Nice bitter finish. (060316)

Pour is orange with no head at all. Aroma is very hoppy and floral. Lots of citrus and sugar. Flavor is a bit thin and weak. Some hops make an appearence but nothing stand out as it should in a IPA. Smells better than it tastes. Medium for the style.

Bottle, 500ml; expiry date: November 2005; eye; brown with reddish reflects, respectable caramel-colour head, good effervresecence; nose: malt, hops, alcool; mouht: malt, alcool, bitterness, thin, it loses some of its bitterness as it warms; contrarily to Goldorak, did not experience floaties and my beer was relatively clear.

Bottle. Dark brown color. Medium head with medium duration. Very light for a stout type. Tastes more like an ale actually.
