Description
Established in 1719, Belhaven is Scotland’s oldest working brewery. With abundant local barley, fine water from the brewery well and access to markets up and down the coast, Belhaven was the perfect place for a brewery back then, and it still is today. In 1719, Dunbar market gardener John Johnstone erected a brewery close to Belhaven Bay and founded a brewing dynasty which was to last for 250 years and a brewery which would last much longer. The brewery and maltings persevered through the wars and upheavals of the early 20th Century and was eventually sold by John Johnstone’s descendants in 1972. In 2005 is was taken over by Greene King who kept the Brewery open in Scotland.

(bottle) Red to amber colour with medium slightly off-white head, quickly diminishing. Malty aroma, light body, quite bland taste. A bit disappointing for me.

Pour is a deep and dark red. Aroma is musty raisons. Flavor is a musty plum with a bit of old malts. Ok for the style but very different. Cool pic on the bottle.

Bottled. Dark brown with brownish head. Roasted malt in aroma with hints of caramel. Flavour is dominated by roast and caramel but also has some hints of cold and old coffee. A bit watery for being a stout. (6 4 6 3 11)

Bottled. (re-rate Dec 2006). Dark ruby red colour, mediumsized beige head. Aroma is sweet malts, raisins and slight hops. Flavour is plum, raisins, dry dark fruit and malts. Sadly almost no roast in it, only some weak hints. Still a very nice stout, with aftertaste of flowery hops, plum and mild roastiness. Slightly highers rating now than in 2005. 7 4 6 4 13.

Bottled. A deeper brown than the Belhaven Scottish & St. Andrews ales, of course. A frothy head over a brown body with red highlights. Heavy malts that are very well matched by a dose of hops. Some definite peat smoke impressions that make run close to phenolic.

Bottled. Kind of a light brown body with a fizzy head. Some diacetyl and buttery hints. Again, a touch of peat, with some cola notes as well. Noticably more bitter than their scottish Ale.

Bottled. Very flavorful session beer. A bonny brown body beneath a frothy head. Huge malt profile, somewhat buttery, with hints of Vienna roast and a little peat. Lightly hopped.

Can at the Syracuse Holiday Brewfest Dec.04 2004. Light brown ale with a cardboard aroma with some prunes. Lightly malty with nice peat moss finish. Light bodied, but good. 6-2-7-2-13 15 may 2005. Much more impressed with the bottle I bought in Nova Scotia, with smoked peat in aroma and in mouth, rich caramel notes, with intense smokeyness coming well and nice bitterness in finish. 7-3-8-3-14

Can version; $1.90 for a 440ml serving. Medium brown, with a soft beighe head. Smells a bit raiseny and like toffee. Taste is kinda watery, with some maltiness in there... really kinda thin. Very drinkable, but lacking a major flavor.
