Description
A small and unique producer, Backacre Beermakers is focused on making a single sour golden ale that is aged for more than a year in oak barrels. The final product is carefully blended from different barrels to achieve a refreshing balance of tart, fruity, and earthy flavors.

Not a "brewery" in the common sense of the word, Backacre Beermakers may be the first example of a "blendery" in the United States. We work with nearby brewers to produce wort (unfermented beer) that we then take to our place for its long transformation into beer. From this stock we carefully blend a single product: BACKACRE sour golden ale.

The idea of making wort at a central brewhouse and fermenting it in other places is a very old one, and still practiced in a few areas of Belgium and Germany. It allows a community to make more efficient use of its resources, especially for beers that are made in small volumes and take a great deal of time to produce.

Our family-owned and -operated blendery was founded in Weston, Vermont in 2010. Our last batch of Vermont beer is still being distributed in the Vermont area through early 2022.

We also began making beer in Denver, Colorado in 2019, and now operate exclusively in Colorado.

Due to our very small size, we are unable to offer tours or visits. There is no retail shop on-site.

You can reach us at info@backacrebeermakers.com.

Sample from Blend #9 at Beer Meets Wood on 09/23/2017. Cloudy pale yellow-gold color with a medium white head that diminishes steadily to a film. Stringy lace. Tart fruit, yeast, hay and malt aroma. Medium body with flavors of funky yeast, lemon and bready malt. The finish is tart with a citrusy aftertaste. Good brew overall.

Sample from the bottle at Beer Meets Wood. Hazy golden color with a decent bubbly white head. Earthy light funk with plenty of tart fruits to counter. Clean well crafted stateside "gueuze" Completely impressed with this offering, I went back for seconds.

Sergey’s hunt; 7.3% ABV; BL07 (if it means anything; maybe Blend 07)
Cloudy golden color. Nice aroma, wet cellar and cobwebs, some Lambic, funky. The mouthfeel is a bit oily; strong acidity, lemony character that blends well with mild funky character, and light cheesy tough.
Somehow, it has some Lambic character in it. Very good.

750ml bottle (thx, John P.!) shared at Brians office. Blend #7. Pours a hazy golden with a weak white head. Aroma is earthy, fruity, close to gueuze aroma. Same taste. Very good.

750mL bottle, pours a cloudy golden with a small white head. Aroma brings out lots of oak, moderate acidity, and some light horse blanket. Flavour is fairly acidic, with some horse blanket, oak, and light leather. On the more acidic side, and nothing like a gueuze. Its a nice sour, but nothing special.

A murky golden sour ale with a very thin off white head. In aroma, loads of lactic acid, Epsom salts, light Brett, lemon juice, very nice. In mouth, a nice sweet fruity malt with smooth lemony notes, lactic acid Epsom salts, nice and smooth. Bottle at Montréal Xmas gathering 2015.

Chriso Tasting, thanks to LKS, 10/07/14. Hazed golden orange with moderate off white spotting and edgework. Nose is tarte citric rind, bitter tangerine, straw, dank oaky wood, light yeast strain. Taste comprises mellow citrics, light acidity, earthy rinse, dank straw, barnyard effect. Medium bodied, fine carbonation, light saltyness and herbals in the close. Decent.
