Backacre Beermakers
Client Brewer in Denver, Colorado, United States 🇺🇸
Established in 2010
Closed in 2025
Not a "brewery" in the common sense of the word, Backacre Beermakers may be the first example of a "blendery" in the United States. We work with nearby brewers to produce wort (unfermented beer) that we then take to our place for its long transformation into beer. From this stock we carefully blend a single product: BACKACRE sour golden ale.
The idea of making wort at a central brewhouse and fermenting it in other places is a very old one, and still practiced in a few areas of Belgium and Germany. It allows a community to make more efficient use of its resources, especially for beers that are made in small volumes and take a great deal of time to produce.
Our family-owned and -operated blendery was founded in Weston, Vermont in 2010. Our last batch of Vermont beer is still being distributed in the Vermont area through early 2022.
We also began making beer in Denver, Colorado in 2019, and now operate exclusively in Colorado.
Due to our very small size, we are unable to offer tours or visits. There is no retail shop on-site.

Forgetfu Tasting at ChrisOs. Hazy gold beer, small fluffy white head. Palate is airy, dry and crisp. Light savoury saltiness like a good Goze. Lemon acid turning bitter. Light dry finish. A bit too sharp to be that drinkable.

Light yellow cloudy pour with sediment. Smells like sulphur and lemon. Taste is weak. Odd sour with lemon and spice. Nice level of tart and oak weak overall though

Bottle thanks to Mr L. Smith. It pours hazy gold with a thick white head. The nose is soft, doughy, barnyard, funk, cream cheese, wood and light smoke. The taste is crisp, tart, pretty acidic, sherbet, lemon, orange peel, straw, acid burn and light alcohol with a dry finish. Medium body and moderate, prickly carbonation. Crisp and tart, but rather acidic.

Bottle shared in London - picked up in VT. Pours unclear yellow with a thick, foamy white head. Pleasant aroma with lots of lemon, peach, some lemon squash. Light-medium sweet flavor with balanced tartness, more lemon, straw, faint apple, hints of salt and alcohol. Light to medium bodied with fine, massaging carbonation. Nicely balanced to finish with citric lemon bite, mild warmth, pear, peach, slight bitter straw. Lovely stuff. Good depth, wonderful balance.

Bottle at Three Penny Taproom on 3/16/14
Mostly clear straw-golden body looks quite gueuze-like and has a small, poorly retained white head and plentiful carbonation in the liquid. Sediment left behind in bottle.
Light sulfur and quite an authentic malo-lactic presentation in the nose is deliciously reminiscent of Cantillon gueuze. Hay, earth, lots of funky barnyard and soft but strong acids fill the nose. More malt presence than the top Belgian gueuzes, though not necessarily more sweetness; I just get more biscuity, lightly bready notes that are certainly not unwelcome and characterful in their own right. A fair amount of buttery, woody oak in the nose, but certainly not overdone by any stretch.
Sweet and sour notes collide up front, with more raw oak and acetic acid than the top gueuzes. It quickly softens out though, leading to more lactic notes, strong brett acids and a clean, sour finish that still has some of the light malt sweetness lingering.
A bit looser/more watery in texture than the best, but that’s a pretty minor complaint. Really there’s not a single major issue with the beer. Any Belgian lambic house could be proud to serve this. A touch sweeter than I would prefer and the alcohol, while not disturbing the flavors, always seems to lighten/loosen the body the higher it gets (in a lambic), I’ve found. Awesome beer, though and I’m sure the longer these guys keep brewing and adjusting, the better it’s going to get. 8/3/8/4/15
Bottle drunk 11/5/16.
The biggest issue I had with this beer in the past was the slight excess of sugar. For a "lambic", it had just too much malt, body and oomph to it (see Boon Vat series....). This bottle, the first I’ve had in over a year or so, seems to be much more dry and snappy. Still has a bit more alcohol presence and maltiness than I’d prefer, but it seems to have shown improvement, which is great. 8/4/8/4/16.
Rating is an average of the bottles I’ve had over the years.

Der deutlich Saure Geruch täuscht bei diesem Bier, es startet vergleichsweise süß und mit sehr starker Karbonisierung. Auch im Mittelteil nur wenig sauer, etwas pappig. Nicht sonderlich. 7/8/8/8/9/8

Bottle shared by Dennis at my house. Pours clear gold with white head - that is very quick dissipating. Nose and taste of lemon, sour fruit, wild yeast, peach and oak. Medium body. Well balanced tartness.

At a tasting, many thanks Ariel, quite bubbley, very hazy lightish orange colour, aroma of sour grapes, vinegar and apple, flavour of white fruit and citrus with some vinegar and apple, a touch of sweetness balancing but not taking from the strong mellow sourness, making an highly drinkable brew, pleasant flavoursome appley aftertaste. Really really good.

Bottle sample at a tasting at Dancing Camel Florentin. Thanks Ariel. Cloudy yellow with a big white head. Great barnyard aroma with zesty fruits, oak and light sweaty notes. Flavor has light sweetish with cookie-ish malt notes, pleasant sourish funky fruitiness (lots of apples) and some apple vinegar notes. Medium-bodied with lively carbonation. Really good and easy-drinking.
