Bottled. Hazy nut brown, small head. Toasty fruit yburnt nose. Sweet and medium bodied with solid chewy backbone covered in earthy lingonberry. Lightly salty finish. Contrary to many other overseas interpretation of the style this one seems to be carefuly modelled after the real, old-fashioned versions, not the Carlsberg brewed macro-stuff. I like it!

Black with a large tan head. Aroma of chocolate, some roasted malts, and light coffee. Medium, chewy body. Chocolate, light roasted coffee beans, some molasses, and some burnt malts. Very tasty and easy to drink. One of their best.

Grapefruit, oranges, peaches, excellent nose with very defined hop character. Body totally falls apart with no mid palate and then some bitterness. What happened to what could have been a great beer?

Huge chocolate malty nose. Big chocolate malt backbone, with enough hops to give this great balance.Full bodied, lingering chocolatey finish. Wonderful

For some reason they decided to use Saaz hops in what otherwise would be a straightforward English PA. The nose is too soft, the mouth is too lightly hopped and the beer goes nowhere.

Big chocolate, cocoa, molasses, coffee, rich nose. Medium mouth, rich molasses, roasted malts, dark chocolate. Great depth. Lingering chocolately finish. Yummy in my tummy.

Dark amber color. Bready, slightly sour nose. Smooth bready mouth with a touch of caramel. Finish just dies and goes nowhere. Lame ending to what could have been a good beer.

Bottle. Rather dark brown color, with copper. Low, fine foamy head. Aroma of coffee, roasted malt, caramel, nuts, a touch of sweetness. Roasted malt flavor, with coffee and caramel in the background. Very roasted. Slightly sweet but dry roasted malt predominates. Very nice. Slightly fruity, raisins, a touch of walnuts. Dry finish of roasted malt and caramel. Excellent beer, darker and more stout-like than any other alts I have tried, but very well done. A complex and creative interpretation of the style.

Draught at the brewpub. Light copper with a nice creamy white head. Fruity, spicy aroma, with cinnamon and caramel. Very fruity flavor, with strong hops, and a crisp, bitter finish. Somewhat lacking punch and crispness. Metallic and flinty, and way too fizzy! The more I drank, the less I enjoyed it. Drinkable, but not near as good as their lagers.

2010 Version in the bottle: Big, biscuity malt aroma. A bit spicy, with caramel and chocolate. Deep amber color, cloudy. Rich caramel malt flavor, bready, with a bit of fruit and alcohol. A bit thin. Nice, bitter finish with a touch of alcohol. Nearly bock-like. Better than last year. 2009 Version 6/3/7/4/13. Light amber malt flavor, with a touch of caramel. Nice saaz hopping. Bitter, with nice body. Good, crisp, hoppy finish. Nice beer with good hops and there is just enough amber to make it tasty, though I would prefer a touch more malt to match the great hopping.
