Admin Note: Portland Brewing Company merged with Saxer Brewing Company in 2000. In 2004 they sold the company to Pyramid Breweries out of Seattle. The Portland Brewing facility was then renamed MacTarnahan's Brewing Company later that year. In 2008 Pyramid Brewing was acquired by Magic Hat Brewing. In 2010 Magic Hat was bought by North American Breweries. Finally in 2012 Florida Ice & Farm Co. (FIFCO USA) acquired North American Breweries and with it the Portland Brewing brand. In 2013, FIFCO announced it would go back to the Portland Brewing Company name in order to better capitalize on the brands original roots.

22 oz. bottle, pours a clear dark golden orange with a small off-white head. Nose brings out piney and resinous hops, and biscuity caramel malt. Flavour brings out resinous hops, some medicinal notes, and caramel malt. Balanced enough, but not the most pleasant flavours. Something is off here. Not very good.

12 ounce bottle into pint glass, best before 6/21/2013. Pours lightly hazy/cloudy deep orange/copper color with a 1-2 finger dense light khaki head with good retention, that reduces to a small cap that lingers. Nice spotty soapy lacing clings on the glass, with a moderate amount of streaming carbonation. Aromas of grapefruit, lemon zest, orange peel, caramel, toffee, toasted biscuit, light nuttiness, floral, grass, light pine, and floral/toasted earthiness. Nice and pleasant aromas with good balance and complexity of citrus hops and dark/bready malt notes; with solid strength. Taste of grapefruit, lemon zest, orange peel, caramel, toasted biscuit, floral, grass, light pine, and floral/toasted earthiness. Light floral/pine bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of grapefruit, lemon zest, orange peel, caramel, toasted biscuit, floral, grass, light pine, and floral/grassy earthiness on the finish for a short bit. Nice balance and solid robustness of citrus hops and dark/bready malt; with a good malt/bitterness balance and zero cloying flavors after the finish. Medium carbonation and light-medium bodied; with a smooth, crisp, and fairly thin mouthfeel that is okay. Alcohol is well hidden with minimal warming present after the finish. Overall this is a pretty solid amber ale. Well balanced citrus hop and dark/bready malt flavors; and very smooth and crisp to drink. Could use some more flavor and body, but pretty enjoyable otherwise.

Pours fairly crystal clear golden amber color with a 1 finger dense and fluffy white head with good retention, that reduces to a small cap that lingers. Spotty soapy lacing clings on the glass, with a moderate amount of streaming carbonation. Aromas of apricot, lemon, pear, apple, light banana, clove, pepper, herbal, grass, candi sugar, bread, light bubblegum, and herbal/yeast earthiness. Damn nice aromas with good balance and complexity of fruity/spicy yeast, pale malt, and earthy hop notes; with good strength. Taste of big apricot, lemon, pear, apple, light banana, clove, pepper, candi sugar, bread, herbal, grass, light bubblegum, and herbal/yeast earthiness. Good amount of earthy yeast spiciness on the finish; with lingering notes of apricot, lemon, pear, apple, light banana, clove, pepper, herbal, grass, candi sugar, bread, light bubblegum, and herbal/yeast earthiness on the finish for a short bit. Fairly dry after the finish. Damn nice complexity and balance of fruity/spicy yeast, pale malt, and earthy hop flavors; with a great malt/spiciness balance and zero cloying flavors after the finish. Medium carbonation and body; with a very smooth, crisp, and slightly bready mouthfeel that is great. Alcohol is very well hidden with only a slight warming present after the finish. Overall this is an excellent tripel! All around great complexity and balance of fruity/spicy yeast, pale malt, and earthy hop flavors; and very smooth and crisp to sip on for the ABV. A very enjoyable offering.

Bottle. Pours black with a light brown head that dissipates to the edges. Aroma has a good amount of sweet dark grain and vanilla with a bit of coffee and roasted malts underlying. Flavor is more coffee forward and is backed by sweet dark grains, sweet chocolate and vanilla.

This is poured into a pint glass.
The appearance was a dark brown close to black color with a one finger off white foamy head that dissipated within about a minute leaving some light speckled lacing clinging here and there around the glass.
The smell had a rich roasty coffee to sweet chocolate malt allowing a creamy sort of caramel to vanilla underneath.
The taste was mainly sweet and still had a decent roasty balance to it all.
On the palate, this one sat about a medium on the body with a fairly decent sessionability about it. The carbonation ran so smooth and velvety in texture.
Overall, this one really lived up to its description - spot on and I would have this again.

Bottle, a 22oz from a mixed pack at Costco. The first shout-out is value, this is a helluva IPA on a budget. Not a world beater, but a decent IPA. Copper color with good clarity, topped with a finger of creamy khaki head. Lots of lacing. Nose is floral and caramel malt, same in the taste. Some herbals and lingering citrus. No complaints at this price point.
