Description
Oldfields Cider is produced by us, The Thompson family, on our 250-acre farm Oldfields, nestled here in the heart of the Teme Valley, Worcestershire. We took this place on in 1960 when it was a hilly, scrub filled smallholding that one supportive neighbour at the time said would ‘never make a farm’. But Jim, the father of current Oldfields custodian Geoff, was undeterred and moved his family in, along with a creaking ancient cider press and apple scratter he’d not long bought from an old boy in Cowsden. And while we were unable to do anything about the hills, over the next few decades those scrubby Broom filled banks were transformed into a thriving verdant farm and put to good use. Something else that was put to good use was that fateful apple press. Every year since 1960 we have made cider. For many years, this was done with that very same press extracting juice that was then transferred a bucket full at a time into old whiskey barrels, for our own consumption and that of our neighbours and friends. Those same neighbours always made time to come along and pitch in on pressing day to secure their summer cider ration.

Keg at The Godd Intent, Brum. Clear light dull gold. No head. Light dry bitterness with a juicy apple juice streak. Light. Thin. Soft-fizzy carbonation. Long dry slightly astringent finish. Nice enough.

Bottle from Melbicks Garden Centre, Coleshill. Clear gold with some white foam that sticks around. Aroma of sweet mellow apple juice; suggesting pleasant but little complexity. Taste for the most part confirms this, sweet apple juice, white sugars (although not oversweet), light tangy pith and skins in the finish with a modest bitterness. Light to medium bodied, prickly carbonation. Simple but quite tasty to be fair.

Bottle from Melbicks Garden Centre, near Coleshill. Clear straw colour with some light white foam at first. Fruity apple pith, light tart note, chewy apple skins, light leather note. Drying, medium bodied, slick, light carbonation. Its quite restrained and the finish fades quite quickly. Its ok but I was expecting better.

Bottle from Melbicks Garden Centre, Coleshill. Good - nice quality blackcurrants used and not too sweet. Bad - apple element a bit too much in the background but at least its there. Tasty and better than average for the style in my opinion. Look: clear purple, some pinkish foam Aroma: slight earthy hedgerow fruity blackcurrant juice, faint apple. Taste: semi-sweet (for a flavoured cider), again earthy to fruity blackcurrant juice, a touch of bittersweet apple. Palate: fairly slick but not syrupy, moderate to high carbonation, semi-dry close.

Keg at Good Intent Birmingham. Pale clear gold, brief white head. Aroma of sweet and tart dessert apples, wood, light funk. Taste is sweet apple with dry finish, fairly fruity and clean tasting. Nice body, refreshing but not too light. Maybe lacks a bit of depth but still good.

500ml bottle from Anthony's of Wellington: BBE February 2025. 330ml went into the slow cooker with a Gammon Joint on 29th March 2024, the remaining 170ml into a glass for me. It's a sparkling, golden cider that reminded me of Christmas's past and I enjoyed my portion.
