[7/15] Bottle. Amber with an inch of white head that lasts all the way. Big noseful of hops: loads of tropical fruit (passionfruit, lychee, guava), hashish, a touch of menthol, grass, singed toffee. Very sweet and fairly plain toffee, creamy texture. Waves of resin, tropical fruit, grass, pepper. Bitterness is only enough really to clean up the sweetness. A bit on the sweet side for me but very good indeed. [3.9] [10/16] Really very sweet but delightful. [4/18] Perhaps less dopey and even more fruity this time. I like the way eventually there's just pepper.

So it seems this version has some of a stock ale aged in a whisky barrel blended into it. Bottle. Black with an inch of tan head that lasts well. Fruity and earthy aroma with chocolate, plums, muscat, whisky, fruitcake spices. Taste has mocha, whisky, spices and an interesting sour plum/ berry note that’s a little astringent. Fairly bitter and a bit ashy at the end. Like this a little less than the old version as it is now, but this may well be spectacular in a couple of years.

Bottle. Lovely clear bronze with an off white head that soon retreats to the rim. Aroma of rich toffee and smoke is straightforward and good. Lowish carbonation - wouldn’t have minded just a tad more. Sweet with gentle bitterness. Woody rather than hammy smoke. Would’ve like a little of a deeper bottom layer in the malts. Nowhere to hide with this sort of thing and it’s pretty convincing.

Cask (gravity). Cloudy amber with a few bubbles. Aroma of peach, pears, caramel. I’m a couple of days late to the party, so perhaps it’s lost condition: anyway it’s completely flat. But still tastes pretty fresh and like a pretty good session bitter. Lightish bodied and summery, but not watery. Fruit as in te aroma, along with some bread crust. Fairly dry at the end with moderate bitterness.

Bottle, 13C. 2013 version is 9.1%, not 7.5%. Black with an inch of light tan head that gradually fades to a fat coat and laces well. Aroma of mocha, blackberries, burnt toffee, some earthy and herbal notes. Silky texture, lowish carbonation. Rather sweet with toffee and mocha, berries, licorice, some ash, light grassy/ herbal notes in brooding bitterness. Aroma made me think there was going to some astringency there at the end, but no. Big, but alcohol is well-integrated: no heat at all. A little on the sweet side for me, but a fine stout. that’s harmonious and interesting.
