On tap at 13th Beer & Burger Fest, Ljubljana. Thanks, Miha! Hazy dark golden to brownish amber, small off-white head. Aroma is funky, citrusy, lemony, fruity, wine-like, some sour fruit. Moderately sour taste, balanced with malty bready sweetness. Flavour is fruity, lemony, slightly sharp wine-like, tannins, some wood and a beautiful dark bready balance. Light to medium body, moderate carbonation, light finish. Complex, yet drinkable.

Wine barrel aged blonde sour from a 37.5 cl 'geuze' bottle and very classy label with relief - this Slovenian brewery must be proud of this one, as my Slovenian beer colleague Davor explained when he offered me this bottle. Thanks for this one Davor! Pours with a thick, eggshell-white, irregularly lacing, mousy, slowly opening head; initially as good as cristal clear, amber-hued orange blonde, nicely misty and peachy with sediment. Aroma of white grapes galore, ripe nectarine, cream, peach, crushed gooseberries, sour yoghurt, dy red wine, cider, lot of vanilla-scenting oak wood, sawdust, lime, marmalade even, plum jam, sour apples. Colourfully fruity-estery onset, unripe peach, yellow plum, redcurrant, purple gooseberries, sour but relatively mildly so with a sweetish core; medium carbonation, full and even somewhat creamy, smooth mouthfeel. Sweet biscuity malt body gently dried by this ongoing lactic tartness, turning it a bit vinous, while this plum-, gooseberry- and nectarine-like fruitiness goes on; mildly drying wood tannins in the end, with a very cider-y and dry wine-like effect. Grape aspects grow strong in the end but remain well-contained, so that a light, charmingly 'dusty' effect can evolve, refreshened by a late, unexpected lime-like 'kick' of sharper acidity, closing the circle. Sour ales in the 'new', Anglo-Saxon way, obviously based on Belgian traditions and still practiced in Belgium itself as well of course, come from every part of the civilized world these days, but not often as good as this one: everything falls well into place here, the bacterial effects are well-contained and elegant and the wine barrel adds a lovely creaminess and juiciness, important structures in this beer, keeping it very drinkable and complex at the same time. Very cleverly done, Belgium's modern Alvinne sours are not too far away here.
