Draught at the Tanabata Beer Festa Toyama, 2010. Sweetish aroma of peaches and papaya. Pale yellow, cloudy color. Semi-sweet flavor of peach, papaya, a touch of diacetyl. Nice dryness, though masically sweet, funky, weird. Barely drinkable.

Draught at the Tanabata Beer Festa Toyama, 2010. The color of a Mango Milkshake. No head, no fizz. Tangy, creamy mango nose. Thick, puree-like body with lots of mango meat. Nice mango flavor is refreshing and not too sweet. A bit of unwanted cardboard flavor too. Maybe I sense a bit of hop? Otherwise nothing like a beer, but very nice on a hot summer morning for breakfast.

Bottle. They grew all the barley in Niigata. Very buttery, yeasty golden malt aroma, with a touch of lemon. Much like their regular beer. Light golden color, cloudy. Rather thin-looking, but a fine, creamy white head. Butter and honey-lemon flavor. Not bad, but much like their other beers, and rather undirected. Fruity, creamy. Rather thick palate. Dry, hoppy finish is ok, but there is a bit of funk going on too. More mediocrity from them. They need new yeast, not new barley

Bottle. Black with a dark brown, frothy, chocolate-Espresso head. Aroma of coffee, chocolate, licorice. Flavors more of the same, though a bit too much sourness in there as well. Interesting licorice and coffee flavor. Creamy. Decent, though it felt like it could be put together a bit more smoothly.

Bottle at Yamaoka. Made from their pilsner, a rather light-colored, thick, syrupy beer. Flavors of apple or pear. Very sweet, but rather enjoyable. Sherry-like and strong.

A slightly sour, very dry, somewhat bitter concoction that I don’t really know how to describe. Very un-beer-like. Some compared it to soy sauce. I didn’t think so really, but the feeling that comparison gives you is about right. Original and in that way interesting, but I don’t need another.

Medium brown color, medium head with large bubbles. Seems to have lots of carbonation. Slightly sweet aroma, rather faint. Some caramel and fruit. Flavor of burnt brown sugar, sweet, burnt, not very strong in flavor either. Some darkish fruits in there as well as caramel. Really quite boring. Slightly reminiscent of a lower strength dark Scotch ale, but not a very good version of one. Flat tasting as well, even though there were so many bubbles. Not a very nice beer.

Deep amber color with a medium head that quickly turned to lace. Fruity aroma, slightly spicy, amber malts, yeast evident, cherries. Sweet, port-like flavor, somewhat earthy and roasted tasting. Dark fruits, also a slightly medicinal aspect. Strong, a slight sour tinge. A bit like cough medicine. Strange and not very nice. Almost flat. Close to vile.

Bottle from Yamaoka. Deep, cloudy gold with an orange tint. Low, fine head. Looks and smells like a hefeweizen. Yeasty, fruity aroma, bananas and spice. Is there no wheat in here??? Full yeasty, sweetish flavor. Very well rounded. Fruity. Hard to see how this is a Koelsch, though it is a pretty decent beer. Nice fruit. Medium to full body. It’s more like a weizen than anything, though! Tastes ok, but I’m not sure what it is really trying to be.
