Description
De kazematten aan het Houten Paard werden gebouwd rond 1680 naar plannen van Vauban, de grote vestingingenieur van Lodewijk XIV. Deze drie unieke kazematten of soutterains maken deel uit van de 17e Eeuwse vestingen die de stad Ieper omwallen.Gedurende de eeuwen werden deze souterrains gebruikt als opslagplaats voor munitie en legermaterieel. Ze deden ook dienst als slaap- en schuilplaats voor de troepen die Ieper tijdens de vele belegeringen hebben verdedigd. Zo richtten de Britse troepen tijdens Wereldoorlog I de kazematten in als 'mess' voor de officieren. Hun commandopost, rustplaats en veldhospitaal werden in 'Hotel de Remparts', zoals de kazematten ironisch werden genoemd, ondergebracht. Ook de Britse soldatenkrant The Wipers Times werd er gedrukt. En nu is er dus een stadsbrouwerij op deze unieke locatie.

Appearance- very dark brown, with a thick creamy beige head of around 3 fingers. Aroma is brown bread, biscuity malt, dark fruit, yeasty traces. Taste is raisin, plum, cherry, stewed dark fruit, biscuity malt, vinous notes, berry fruit. Fluffy bready malt loaf, red wine in the finish.

Bottle at home in Hackney - picked up from HOTM. Pours mostly clear red-brown with a big, creamy khaki head. Light to medium sweet notes of raisin, prune, grape, toasted malts. Medium bodied with fine, massaging carbonation. Balanced finish, more dark fruits, toasted bread. Easy-drinking dubbel. Tasty.

Bottle 33cl. from slijterij Breebaart, Purmerend @home poured into a tulip glass. Opaque amberbrown, huge loose foamy beige head, slowly dissipating, patchy lacing. Aroma roasted malts, dark fruits, cherries, some cocoa, woody notes, vinous touch. Taste medium sweet and bitter, malty, dark fruits, woody notes. Medium body, oily texture, soft carbonation, rather short sweetbitter aftertaste, fruity and woody notes, quite nice.

Appearance is clear amber, with a 2-3 finger foamy white head. Aroma is yeasty malt, raisin, toffee, fruitcake hints. Taste is spicy malty hops, fruitcake, marzipan hints, toffee, bit of sugary dark fruit.

A nice light dubbel. Not great, maybe this bottle is a bit oxidized. But the underlying dark candi is good. 1-th commandment Amsterdam

Fles 33cl thuis. Caramel, pruim, rood fruit, licht chocolade, licht vineus, redelijk zoet, licht banaan, redelijk droog, licht koolzuur, wat bittertonen. Redelijk vol van smaak. (11-4-2021).

29/3/2021. Bottle sample courtesy of danlo, cheers Ed! Pours clear mid to dark brown with minimal head. Aroma of bread, malt, toffee, medicine, dried fruits, yeast, prune, ripe banana. Medium plus sweetness, moderate bitterness. Medium body, oily texture, average carbonation. Sweet and medicinal to finish. Not a big fan.

330ml bottle from ORB, Darlington. Hazy amber brown colour, off-white foamy head and aroma of wheat, caramel, bready, yeast. Taste is malty, wheaty, bready, some fruity yeasty notes, banana, dried fruits and tangy grassy bitterness. Medium bodied, soft carbonation, lingering sweetish yeasty bitter finish. Quite drinkable.

Bottle. Wine Rack, Sharrow, Sheffield. Hazed, conker brown. Thick, uneven, beige foam. Nose has gravy granules. Some date and prune. Some brown bread. Taste has soft sweetness. A little dry. Medium body. Distractingly high light of carbonation. Dry and light bitter finish.
