Houten Paard 1, Ieper, 8900, Belgium
Description

Very huge, dense, irregular foxy cream coloured head over reddish, deep brown beer; lots of lace. Sweet nose with brown sugar over-obvious, herbs, wood, chocolate, hops. Bitterish coffee, chicory, with sweet & roasted malts underneath. Hint of sulphur, and melanoidins, of course. Malt- and sugarsweetness starts to build up, certainly after some warming up, but the coffee-ish & leafy bitterness remains on top. At least medium bodied, not feeling thick, but bit creamy feel from the head. Medium to well-carbonated in the end. Classic (if more Walloon than Flemish character), but quite well executed, feared worse.

Bottle from Drankenhandel Leiden. Lots of dried fruit in the aroma, with brown malt, yeast, raisins, prunes. Flavour is lightly sourish with a moderate sweetness. Medium body. I'm not sold on this one.

330ml bottle from Honest Brew. Look - clear gold, small white head, some lacing. Nose - malty and herbal, hint of pepper. Ok. Taste - Starts biscuit malts, yeasty, then a fruity tang, herbs, spice - very nice. Finish though has an odd clingy malt stale-cardboard to it which I cant quite put my finger on. Update: ingredients show they use corn - really, is that normal in a Belgium blonde? It maybe very different to corn syrup but I'm getting the same flavour notes in the finish to lets say a cheap strong lager. Palate - medium bodied, frothy to soft carbonation. A very mixed beer.

Bottle with cork 0,75ltr: Hazy blond colored brew with an very light sweetbitter taste, some hints of spices, vanilla and far in the back some spicy peppers. Good beer to think at the pointless Worldwar 1.

Pleasant aroma of malts, brown kandij sugar, dark dried fruits and mild spices, hints of leather. Malty flavour with notes of brown kandij sugar, but not very sweet. Hints of mild spices, dark dried fruits and oak. Very nice.

330ml bottle @ Bar Bernard. Pours a slightly unclear blonde, very large white head filling the Wipers Times glass. Lightly peppery nose, continuing to form a spicy blonde character, quite aromatic and flavoursome. Probably a good pairing beer for Boury.
