Description

Bottle (well out of date) from Cask Beer Oasis, Crewe. Bit of a weird one this. Pours a murky reddish brown – OK. But the head on what I poured was cream and fair-sized but transient. A few minutes later I noticed that what was left in the bottle had slowly generated an enormous head and was now coming out the top ! Anyway, the aroma has malts, molasses and nuts. In the mouth it is sweet and malty but with some lingering bitterness underneath. Flavours of dried fruits, redcurrants, malts and yeast. Finish is slightly dry, with hints of red wine. Decent enough.

Bottle from Great Grog. Clear ruby/brown body with a massive off-white head. Steady carbonation. Faint lacing. Aroma of tea and red apple. Flavour of crisp red apple, bread and brown sugar. Medium body with a frothy mouthfeel. Very fizzy. This has an interesting sourness to it that sets it apart from other Dubbels.

Bottle from Drinks Vanuxeem, Ploegsteert, Belgium. Pours a hazy golden/amber colour with a slightly muddy look and a large fluffy white head. Aromas of yellow fruits, bananas, floral, a touch of herbal and a little spice. Taste has lots of peppery spice, more yellow fruits coming through, more floral and herbal and a very mild earthy hop on the finish. Nicely balanced beer. Medium body and fairly low carbonation. Very decent Blonde beer and much better than their Tripel i had earlier.

Bottle from Drinks Vanuxeem, Ploegsteert, Belgium. Pours a hazy amber colour with a large thick creamy off-white head. Light aromas of yellow fruits, marzipan and peppery spice. Taste is quite boozy with marzipan, butterscotch, peppery spice and more warming alcohol throughout. Caramel and brown sugar also on a sweet sticky finish. Not much fruitiness on the palate. Medium to full body, fairly low carbonation and smooth sticky mouthfeel. Alcohol very present and not very well hidden. A bit messy with no real balance and also too sweet and cloying for me personally. Looks nice but ultimately a bit disappointing.

500ml can picked up at St Bernardus brewery during a bike ride. Drunk at home whilst hearing the death of the Queen. Generally clear gold, good white head. Softly sweet lager profile with an unexpected but welcome Belgian yeastiness coming into view, distant citrus fruits. Really nice this.
