Description
We're Hackney Brewery — a small, independent craft brewery from London who has been dedicated to producing the most progressive accessible styles of hop forward independent craft beer to high standards.

We’re passionate about producing high-quality beers which are not only flavourful and aesthetically pleasing but also suitable for anyone who is interested in trying good quality craft beer. We've spent years refining and progressing our recipes to keep up with people’s ever-changing taste.

We were founded in 2011 by Peter Hills and Jon Swain in a couple of railway arches in Haggerston, Hackney.

Over the years we’ve invested in state-of-the-art lab equipment, new machinery and we strive to continuously improve our processes and work to get the best out of our ingredients.

Now with a focus on Keg and Can formats with modern and US hop forward styles, we provide a complete core range of crafted styles from Session-able table beers, hop forward pales and IPA’s, hazy juice bombs, a multi award winning peach and basil sour and crystal clear craft lager.

In 2021 we opened our new site on the Blackhorse Beer Mile, High Hill Taproom, home to Hackney Brewery.

Bottle at home, from Broadway Wines, 29/05/14. Dark mahogany brown with a well appointed beige covering that stays for the show - a good looking beer. Nose is caramel, light roast, hoppy tones, dark berry fruit, light smoke, hint of creosote. Taste comprises dark malts, chalky minerals, earthy hops, dark fruits, light spice, hint of liqourice, toffee, light roasty tones.. Medium bodied, light spritzy carbonation, hoppy tones and rich dark malt in the close. Solid easy drinking stuff, plenty of character, one of the better beers I’ve had from this style.

Bottle at home, picked up from Broadway Wines, 24/05/14. Almost clear golden amber with a well appointed off white head that dissipates a little but retains as a covering. Nose is floral hops, biscuit notes, light caramel, orange tinges. Taste comprises caramel, biscuit, floral notes, light citric peel, bitter orange. Medium bodied, fine carbonation, semi drying close with subtle hop bitterness. Ok easy drinker but pretty so so as the style goes, lacks the juicy citric edge and hop presence I crave from an APA.

Cask gravity at CPBF 2014. It pours golden-orange with a tiny white head. The nose is fresh, orangy, tangerine, passion fruit, straw and light sweat. The taste is citrus-driven, grapefruit, orange peel, passion fruit, dried mango, piney, light honey and decent bitterness with a dry, pithy finish. Medium body and soft carbonation. Very citrus driven. Nice passion fruit action. Quaffable.

Cask at the Clapton Hart - Hackney. Pours clear gold with a frothy, white head. The nose has tangerine and orange. Light to medium sweet with soft minerals, lightly juicy citrus, mild pale bread, some flinty minerals. Light to medium bodied with fine carbonation; good condition. Nicely balanced to finish with further juicy tangerine, just enough pale malt sweetness, light minerality, hints of pine needles. Solid offering.

Bottle at home in London - picked up at an off-licence in Hackney. Pours clear brown with a frothy, quickly fading beige head. Lightly toasted dark malts in the nose with subtle dry chocolate and scorched earth. Light to medium sweet flavor with smokey dark malts, a bit of burnt earth bitterness, well-toasted wholegrain bread. Medium bodied with fine to average carbonation. Reasonably well balanced to finish with moderate roasted malts, more sugary and charred toast, earth, ash, faint burnt leaves, rocks, just whispers of burnt toffee. Interesting beer. It’s pretty well balanced overall and drinks nicely.

Cask gravity at Firkin Ale House Folkestone. Black beer lasting tan head. Good roasty aroma bit too much liquorice for me. A little thin. Some chocolate. Not for me but ok good condition

Gravity cask at the Taproom - Islington, London. Pours perfectly clear gold with a creamy, white head. Lovely pissy hops on the nose with accents of orange, grapefruit and papaya. Light-medium sweet flavor with rich and dank urine, a bit of sticky pine, ripe citrus, supporting pale malt sweetness. Ligh to medium bodied with fine carbonation; decent condition. Sticky and dank on the finish with day-old piss, mango, pine, pale bread, tangerine. Really nice Nelson Sauvin expression here. The overall beer could be a touch more graceful but the beautyn of this hop compensates for any shortcomings.

Draft at Pigs Ear 2013 - London. Pours mostly clear amber-brown with a foamy topping. Basic stuff, some lightly dried brown bread, leafy hops, brown sugar. Light bodied with fine carbonation and creamy mouthfeel. Fair balance to finish, just more simple bready malts and leafy bitterness. So so.
