Description
Winning innovator on the Belgian beer market with brands such as Maes, Cristal, Desperados, Grimbergen, Affligem, Strongbow and Mort Subite.

De “Brouwerijen Alken-Maes NV” ontstond officieel in 1988, als gevolg van de fusie van de brouwerijen Maes en Cristal Alken. Maar de roots van beide entiteiten gaat terug tot omstreeks 1880. In Waarloos kocht Egied Maes toen nl. de brouwerij Sint-Michaël, terwijl korte tijd later Arthur Boes een brouwerij startte in Alken, zo’n 100 km verderop.

Beide brouwerijen ontwikkelen zich stelselmatig, met bv. Cristal dat in 1928 als eerste Belgische pils het licht ziet. Maes Pils volgt in 1946. Nadien vervoegen Grimbergen, Ciney en andere bieren de portfolio, tot aan de fusie in 1988. Na onderdeel te hebben uitgemaakt van Danone en Scottish & Newcastle, wordt Alken-Maes in 2008 eigendom van Heineken.

Bottle, clear orange golden beer, small head. Aroma is citrus, grain, orange, fruity. Taste is grainy, malty, citrus, hops. Quite nice

Flesje gedronken bij H. en B. Troebel goudgeel bier, heftig schuimend tijdens inschenken. Aroma is moutig, hoppig en kruidig. De smaak is zoet en kruidig. Nasmaak is kruidig en hoppig.

Can@Monks Cafe, Wallingatan. Hazy orange colour with a small white foamy head. Aroma is grapefruits, some zest and mild herbal tones. Flavour is grapefruits, some sweet sugary tones with mild acidic sweetness to it.

Can@Monks Cafe, Wallingatan. Hazy golden colour with a small white head. Aroma is lemon, lime, some cactus tones with a bit cucumbery and earthy tones too. Flavour is citrus, some cactus and mild earthy tones. Sweetish sugary, with some earth and grains in the aftertaste. Not that much of a surprise...

Bottle@Monks Cafe, Wallingatan. Rubyish brown colour with a small off-white foamy head, which leaves some lace. Aroma is mild sugary tones with some rye bready and toasted elements too. Flavour is wort, with rye bread, some grains, mild sugary sweet tones as well as some toast. Not THAT offensive.

Bottle@Monks Café, Wallingatan. Goldeny orange colour with a mediumsized foamy white head, which leaves some lace. Aroma is grainy, some cardboard, mild herbal and earthy tones with quite much sugary sweet tones too. Flavour is sugar, some herbal, mild earthy and dusty tones with cardboard being there as well.

Hazy pale yellow colour, medium sized dense snow-white head; aroma and taste of lemon zesty, coriander, wet wheaty, clove and slight nutmeg notes; quite good one
