3 Stars Brewing Company is a brewery delivering on the promise of bringing locally hand crafted ales to the DC beer community. The company was founded by Dave Coleman and Mike McGarvey, two longtime friends who decided to seize the opportunity to build a brewery and produce high quality beer in the District of Columbia – hoping to make this world-class city a world-class craft beer destination.

To date, the brewing team at 3 Stars has released over 200 different distinctive beers and cultivated a reputation for pushing the envelope when it comes to creativity. They have been recognized for their commitment to their craft, and have received multiple awards for their achievements.

Draught @ The Churchkey, Wash., D.C. Pours slightly hazy amber with airy off-white head. Clear, intensive hoppy aroma with notes of grass and citrus as well as faint malty touches. Bitter, hoppy flavour with notes of lemon peel and grass. Acetic and bitter finish. A nice one.

Draft sampled at Pizzeria Paradiso Dupont. Pours black with a small beige head. Aroma of strong rich coffee, dark chocolate, caramel. Flavour is heavy sweet and bitter. Thick mouthfeel. Medium to full bodied with soft carbonation.

On draft at Pizzeria Paradiso. Pours black with a tan head. Strong coffee nose. Flavors of coffee and cocoa nibs with some smoky notes. Bitter roasted malt finish.

Cask pour at the brewery, right after growler hours at a AHA rally. This poured a slightly cloudy, hazy orange-yellow color with a small white head. Aroma was sweet malts, grains, some citrus and a touch of leafy notes. Not a whole lot of coconut came out in this unfortunately, but it was pretty refreshing and easy to drink. Crank up the Coconut!

4oz sample at Churchkey’s 3 Stars 1st Anniversary event. Pours a hazy, caramel amber with one ring of clumpy, beige head. Nose is a mix of booze, chocolate, tropical fruit, caramel, pear. Boozy flavor, can sugar, rum, spice, nail polish, malt, caramel, a little vanilla. Full, spicy finish. A little hot. Seems a bit out of proportion.

4oz sample at Churchkey’s 3 Stars 1st Anniversary event. Pours a clear, cola brown with one ring of white head. Nose is nutty, a little chocolate, bread, soap, caramel. Flavor is malty, rye, chocolate, nuts, toasted bread. Everything is very well balanced. Clean finish. A great example of the style. Plenty of flavor without being heavy.

4oz sample at Churchkey’s 3 Stars 1st Anniversary event. Cask pours a hazy gold with one ring of white head. Nose is sweet, peppery, soap, flowers, honey. Flavor is kind of the same, sweet, vegetal, peppery, flower petals, honey. Clean, peppery finish. Simple.

4oz sample at Churchkey’s 3 Stars 1st Anniversary event. Cask pours a murky yellow with some ringing, white head. Nose is pungent, citrus, orange, scallion, soap, lemon, perfume. Flavor is sweet, peppery, orange, lemon, lemoncello, herbal. Clean, peppery finish. Nose promises a lot but the flavor failed to live up.

4oz sample at Churchkey’s 3 Stars 1st Anniversary event. Cask pours a translucent gold with some filmy, white head. Big lime nose, basil, tarragon, anise, coconut, green peppercorn. Flavor is lightly malty, peppery, green bell pepper, citrus, anise, some tarragon. All flavors are well balanced. Lightly chalky, peppery finish. Refreshing and unique.
