Cask-conditioned at the Shakespeare, Victoria Street, Bristol. This was served in tired condition. Brown coloured with no head. Sweet caramel aroma followed by treacly flavour and slightly sour aftertaste. Poor.

Cask at GBBF 2006. A hazy orange beer with a bubbly white head. The aroma is sweet malty with light notes of hops and caramel. The flavor is sweet malty with strong notes of caramel, leading to a dry bitter end.

Cask handpull at Ship & Mitre, Liverpool. Copper/gold colour with lasting thin beige head. Some hop/yeasty aroma. Good in mouth, some depth, good solid pale malts. Good condition, tingly carbonation on tongue. Earthy hop and bit of citrus on finish. Competent bitter.

Cask handpull at County Hotel, JDW, Ashford. Reddish copper colour with lasting bubbly beige head. Some yeast and red fruit malt aroma. Some red apple too. Good fullness in mouth. More fruit salad flavour in mouth. Some earthy hop finish. Some juicy fruit too. Good juicy bitter.

(Cask at Dog & Duck, Soho, London, 24 Nov) Dark brown, chestnut colour with small head. Malty, nutty nose with caramel and a hint of dusty hops. Malty, nutty taste with caramel, a hint of dried fruit and some dusty hops in the finish. Ok, but wouldn’t suffer from some more hops to balance the malty sweetness.

Cask handpull at Folkestone Wetherspoons. Copper colour with lasting bubbly off white head. Reasonably good fruit on aroma. Very nice bitterness on end. Fresh, likeable bitter. Tingly finish on tongue. Some yeast on aroma. Hop/bitterness are good.

Cask at JDW Penny Black, Bicester, 22-10-06. This was labelled as Original Bitter as I recall on the pumpclip but strength was 3.8% like the one here and I couldn’t find an Original on the Hydes list so hope this is in the correct place. Almost golden in colour with very little head, It had that Northern taste about it, not that I can describe that particularly well, but like Mungo states this did have an earthy twang about it. Very flavoursome for it’s strength nice hoppy bitter but balanced out by some sweetness this was a jolly decent session beer.

Cask sampled with Finn at The Glasshouse (Wetherspoon) in Norwich. Golden brown. Missing head. Malty to the nose. Dry and rather faint fruity flavour. Thin palate. Not actually a treasure (26.09.2006).
