Bottle at Brothers. I got very excited seeing this one, thinking it was a Flemish Oud Bruin. Oh well. It’s a decent enough old ale with fair body and nice flavour.

2008 bottle. Fruity flavor, with lots of berries, toast, some alcohol and chocolate. Good, not great. Maybe too old.

Dark brown with a creamy beige head that fades but laces well. Aroma of caramel and nuts with an intriguing new/old world hop note: citrus and pine are there, but so are flowers and spices. Also a hint of basement. The spices dominate the taste at first and the bitterness masks the sweetness of the caramel and fruit. A little alcohol burn in a bitter finish that has some citrus as well as lots of pepper. There’s no bleeding date on the bottle but this would have been better in another six months (when it more obviously be an ESA).

Bottle, 12C Amber, beige head fades to a good coat. Low bead. Caramel and resin aroma. Some fortified wine or even Retsina character. There’s also murky barnyard yeast in the aroma. Syrupy and very boozy for 7.1%. Big toffee taste with quite a lot of resinous and spicy bitterness. Some funk and alcohol there too. This is a rather strange beer - it’s like an English Strong Ale with Belgian yeast and New World hops. And it’s pretty horrible.
