Rogue Ales was founded in Ashland, Oregon in 1988 by Jack Joyce, Rob Strasser, and Bob Woodell. Construction of the first brewpub began in June 1988 in Ashland. The 10 bbl brew system was set up in the basement with a 60-seat Pub above. The Brewery and Pub opened in October 1988 to moderate success and soon, the company started looking to expand. In February 1989, construction began on the Bay Front Brew Pub in Newport, Oregon; it opened in May1989. Rogue now has four brewpub locations in Oregon: Newport, Astoria, Portland and Independence, and a fifth at the Rogue Nation World Headquarters in Newport.

The great aroma and dark color of this beer made me very excited to take a sip, but when I did, I was not as impressed as I thought I would be. It is a great stout, but it's a little on the bitter side. However, the pack I bought may have been old (it was on the beer distributors shelf collecting dust), so that may be a factor in this review. Not nearly as good as Victory Storm King Imperial Stout, or Samuel Smith Oatmeal Stout, but still very good. Better than guinness anyway.

ReRate: a three year old vintage is drinkable - chewy, piney, slight band-aid, very richly hops, bitter chocolate, earthy malt. Maybe will continue to improve but has too far to go for me. Original: Well, I've finally found a beer that is overhopped. It's just bitter, with no other sensation. Aroma is acceptible, but the muddy appearance and unbalanced flavour is not desirable. If you want a hoppy barley wine, grab a Big Foot, Horizontal or Behemoth.

When i tasted this i immediately thought, Sierra Celebration Ale. . . but not nearly as good. still a pleasant beer though. very complex floral/hop notes. The beer is too thin though and becomes watery very quickly and you feel the good taste potential wash away as it goes down.

2002 bottle Great amount of hops and balanced just right with the coffee taste. One of the better stouts produced in America and definitely worth a try. Complex and dry. Good barley taste, not too sweet for a sweet stout. 2004 bomber. Wow. that was one of the first beers I rated and without going in to too much lame detail, I was just about spot on for the rating I would give it now. Dry coffee flavored palate, a bit of chalky like texture. Quite roasty and complex with plenty of malts. The cascades are apparent but not overly so. A very dry chocolatey finish. Good stuff tending much on the dry side.

Nice refreshing beer - is there a developing trend among these so-called red ales? I seem to see one: balanced caramel malt sweetness and med hop flavors, like a darker, redder APA. This one fit the bill: nice sweet malts up front, good caramel character, balanced bitterness - favors the malt. Light tingly almost citrusy hop flavors and aromas are present. Nice dark red color and large foamy head that clings to the glass all the way down. Crisp and refreshing.

Soft chocolate and caramel malt sweetness up front, followed by a dry, non-bitter finish, with nutty overtones. Aroma is light with chocolate and hazelnuts. Easy drinking, and not as sweet as you might expect from something called nectar - but the nut flavors make it something not to do too much of.

This one came in the new bottle with a big American flag on it, and a notice that proceeds are being donated to charity. I understand they had to get special permission to use a flag on the bottle. On to the beer: Dark copper-brown, lightly sweet caramel-nut aroma. Light maltiness in flavor, clean and sweet. Solid bitterness in the back. Unusually crisp for a brown ale.

Rerate: Hazy light amber, small head. Light floral aroma - some hints of spice. Light prickly palate, semi-sweet malt upfront is quickly overtaken by medium bitterness. Typical Rogue: weak on the malt, alot of bittering hops, lacking in flavoring hops.

Perhaps my first experience with crystal hops, and now one of my favorite Rogue's. Fresh, grapefruity and piney/resiny hop flavor and aroma. Sufficient maltiness (pleasant surprise from Rogue). Really an AIPA, not a bitter.

Chipotle Ale from Rogue Ales & Spirits

What a nice surprise, and proof that chilis and beer can go together. Slightly hazy amber color, with large foamy white head. Deep, sweet (caramel/toffee), slightly smoky aroma. Some slight hop aroma is detectable. Flavor is a little sweet up front, with nice toffee notes, if subdued. Deep smokiness from the roasted chipotles, finishes with a smooth medium bitterness and a twinge of heat in the throat. Very nice overall, and fairly well integrated flavors.
