Description
Great Notion Brewing is a project started by three friends; Andy Miller, James Dugan, and Paul Reiter. All three guys met each other out of coincidence, they live on the same street in North Portland. Andy and James met each other while home brewing in 2010, and began developing recipes and building a friendship. Together they have 25 years of brewing experience with medals in the National Homebrew Competition for fruit lambic and Double IPA. Paul Reiter has a degree in business and finance with a focus on start-ups and creative enterprise . In April of 2014, the boys finally got together and shared some home brew. On this night they enjoyed a Stout with hand smoked Vienna malt, a 3 year old Peach Sour, and a 10% double IPA. It’s fair to say, on this night, Great Notion Brewing was born.

On tap at Great Notion, pours a cloudy golden orange with a small white head. Aroma brings out nice woody barrel notes, stone fruits and light citric. Flavour is very citric and acidic, with tons of very tart stone fruits, loads of citric notes and moderate wood character. Very citric, puckering and light wood. Thanks Jay for sharing the crowler! Poured into a teku showing pitch black with sparse white foam lacing. The nose shows strong maple forwardness with undertones of milk chocolate. The palate is lightly carbonated and light bodied. Maple forward but with a distinct coffee-like tartness and under tones of dark chocolate with once again more maple on the resurgence. Surprisingly not cloying or overly sweet and very well made for a maple beer.

Crowler fill, shared at Little Leeds Beer House. Cloudy, pale gold. Barely a head. Nose has sweetened blueberry. Blueberry milkshake. Some milk. Taste is sweet and milky, with some lactic sourness. Medium body, and a bit slick. Milky sweet and tangy sour finish. Doesn’t come together at all well, for me.

Crowler fill, shared at Little Leeds Beer House. Cloudy, pale orange. Film of white head. Nose has ripe (funnily enough) stone fruit. Loads of peach and apricot. Orange pulp. Watermelon. Creamy malts. Taste is light, creamy sweet, with minimal bitterness. Mouthfeel is light to medium, with bright, lively carbonation. Any proper bitterness comes at the end, and lingers a while. Great stuff.
