Description
Great Notion Brewing is a project started by three friends; Andy Miller, James Dugan, and Paul Reiter. All three guys met each other out of coincidence, they live on the same street in North Portland. Andy and James met each other while home brewing in 2010, and began developing recipes and building a friendship. Together they have 25 years of brewing experience with medals in the National Homebrew Competition for fruit lambic and Double IPA. Paul Reiter has a degree in business and finance with a focus on start-ups and creative enterprise . In April of 2014, the boys finally got together and shared some home brew. On this night they enjoyed a Stout with hand smoked Vienna malt, a 3 year old Peach Sour, and a 10% double IPA. It’s fair to say, on this night, Great Notion Brewing was born.

Aromas are fresh resin and citrus hops with some caramel, floral, malt and a bit of MJ. Flavors are similar to nose. Great balance between bitter, sweet and carbonation. Juicy for a West Coast. Pretty good. Wish I had more.

16oz can of pulp. Not overly thick though, nearing opaque with a huge cap of rocky white head. Floral nose, citrus and citrus blossom, grass, some mango, perfume. Flavor has citrus, orange and mango, savory herbs, oats arrive, honey too. Pillowy, easy drinking finish.

12 oz. can, pours inky, motor oil black with a tiny tan head. Nose is over-the-top with intense maple syrup, deep coffee, sugars, and then the bourbon shows itself—but the maple syrup still drowns out the barrels even after 34 months in barrels. Flavour is much more dominated by the intense bourbon barrels, thankfully, with the maple syrup and coffee than kicking in with their own intensity. Fairly boozy, which helps cut down on perceived sweetness. Surprisingly great BA version of a base beer that is so over-the-top.

Can from Tavour. Pours hazy orange gold with a decent white head. Aroma is simply dank fruit. Approaching full body. Juicy but burningly dank and bitter. Dank and mixed fruits for flavor. Excellent and extremely tasty.

16 ounce can from Tavour. Cloudy yellow gold pour. Bubbly white head. Big aromas of tangerine and mango. Flavor mirrors nose. Tangerine and mango along with a big dose of grapefruit and pine needles and resin. A bit pithy on backend.

16 oz. can, pours a hazy dull golden with a small white head. Aroma has plenty of woody, piney hops, gentle dankness, and oily resins. Flavour has plenty of oily resins, some pine, a touch of dankness, and crisp biscuity malt. There’s a fungal—almost herbal—character to the hops that is less than optimal, but it’s a well-structured westie. Decent.

Aromas are resin, mango, citrus, malt and maybe some pineapple. Flavors are similar to nose. Pineapple comes out a bit more and is well balanced between bitter, sweet and carbonation. Decent but nothing special.

473mL can. Pours a slightly hazy golden blonde with a white head. Allium, pine, some dank oils, and sweet malts on the nose. Flavour has dry allium, some woody pine. There's a weird herbal quality that I assume is from the "natural products". Overall quite good, but I wish that they would stick to the hops and not the hop products.

16 oz can. Aroma is cantaloupe, peachy, tangerine, dank, lightly grassy. Pours mostly clear golden with a one finger bone-white head with decent retention. Taste has a moderate pithy bitterness with juicy, dank, and piney hop flavors.

Roast, maple syrup, almond, coffee. Lots of vanilla for sure. Pours black with mocha head. Bittersweet finish, which leans initially towards bitter end then finishes with sweeter aftertaste. Nicely balanced adjuncts. Tap at Brew Birds.
