Description
Great Notion Brewing is a project started by three friends; Andy Miller, James Dugan, and Paul Reiter. All three guys met each other out of coincidence, they live on the same street in North Portland. Andy and James met each other while home brewing in 2010, and began developing recipes and building a friendship. Together they have 25 years of brewing experience with medals in the National Homebrew Competition for fruit lambic and Double IPA. Paul Reiter has a degree in business and finance with a focus on start-ups and creative enterprise . In April of 2014, the boys finally got together and shared some home brew. On this night they enjoyed a Stout with hand smoked Vienna malt, a 3 year old Peach Sour, and a 10% double IPA. Itโs fair to say, on this night, Great Notion Brewing was born.

473mL can. Pours a slightly hazy golden blonde with a white head. Allium, pine, some dank oils, and sweet malts on the nose. Flavour has dry allium, some woody pine. There's a weird herbal quality that I assume is from the "natural products". Overall quite good, but I wish that they would stick to the hops and not the hop products.

16 oz can. Aroma is cantaloupe, peachy, tangerine, dank, lightly grassy. Pours mostly clear golden with a one finger bone-white head with decent retention. Taste has a moderate pithy bitterness with juicy, dank, and piney hop flavors.

Roast, maple syrup, almond, coffee. Lots of vanilla for sure. Pours black with mocha head. Bittersweet finish, which leans initially towards bitter end then finishes with sweeter aftertaste. Nicely balanced adjuncts. Tap at Brew Birds.

16oz can. Drank it from the can, so I'll assume this is haze. Nose is nice, floral, big citrus and orange, straw, some passionfruit. Flavor is malt and oat and wheat, straw, orange and orange curd, a little mango. Its simple but not to a fault. Pillowy finish that drinks a lot easier than 9%. A pinch of paper on the end makes me worry about the can't freshness.

Dark brown, not much head. Lots of maple up front, vanilla, coffee, and some mellow barrel. Coffeeish, rich, maple, hard to identify what barrel, because thereโs so much going on with the base. Still, the added richness and tannins are pretty good.

Cloudy, sort of dull, bright tropical aroma, guessing that is the mangosteen. Lots of bitterness, alcohol, not bad though because of that big mangosteen character.

Lots of vanilla and lots of berry. On palate and aroma. Mild tartness. Pretty simple but it works. Very purple.
