Description
Great Notion Brewing is a project started by three friends; Andy Miller, James Dugan, and Paul Reiter. All three guys met each other out of coincidence, they live on the same street in North Portland. Andy and James met each other while home brewing in 2010, and began developing recipes and building a friendship. Together they have 25 years of brewing experience with medals in the National Homebrew Competition for fruit lambic and Double IPA. Paul Reiter has a degree in business and finance with a focus on start-ups and creative enterprise . In April of 2014, the boys finally got together and shared some home brew. On this night they enjoyed a Stout with hand smoked Vienna malt, a 3 year old Peach Sour, and a 10% double IPA. It’s fair to say, on this night, Great Notion Brewing was born.

Can to becher pint glass.
Appearance: glossy yellow transparent color with a one finger white foamy head which dissipated finely to leave some light semi-sticky lace
Aroma: citrusy to danky onion to clean grassy and piney hop blend and some papaya flesh and orange pulp character which rolls into the blend with the crackery malts
Flavor: combines all the prior mentioned aromas together bittersweetly and eloquently; subtle crisp papaya and danky onion sweet aftertaste
Texture: medium bodied; good as a sipper; semi-smooth along my tongue; finishes somewhat danky and orangey with the papaya
Overall: I'd say a pretty nicely done IPA I believe was done up in a West coast style and very worthy of returning to.

Can to tulip.
Appearance: semi-glossy copper color with a two and a half fingers of white foamy head which slid off delicately to leave some mild lace
Aroma: grapefruity to danky to pineapple-y blend of hops; subtle clean cracker malts
Flavor: bittersweet juicy hoppiness rolling through clean malts; crisp juicy and pineapple-y aftertaste
Texture: medium bodied with a subtle sessionability about it; some clean juicy hop abrasion but nothing as a flaw; finishes semi-crisp and juicy
Overall: nicely done twist on a West coast styled IPA but adding in some subtleties of a NEIPA. I'd bang this again.

Can to tulip.
Appearance: semi-clear orange color with a quickly dissipating foamy head, no lace
Aroma: key lime sweet and tart qualities, vanilla, cream and some graham cracker
Flavor: copies the prior mentioned aromas nicely and adds in a subtle sour tone; quick aftertaste of key lime and graham cracker
Texture: about medium bodied, perhaps just a touch under; mostly a sipper; clean crisp and tart finish
Overall: pretty nice pastry sour ale as a key lime pie sour. I wouldn't mind having again on a Summer night.

Exceptional WCIPA, offering up bright notes of grapefruit, citrus pith, lime, tropical fruit and pine, with dank popping up on the back end leading to a woody, bitter finish. Great pint.

16oz can from Tavour. Hazy yellow pour, large airy head eventually settles, streaky lacing. Citrusy aroma, zesty, grapefruit, pineapple. Citrus peel is strong in the flavor, zesty, dry. Full feel, kind of mellow at first, a bit more intensity in the taste.

Pint can. Pineapple aroma with notes of mango, orange, lime, tangerine and dank grapefruit. Pours hazy golden colored with a finger of white head that has excellent retention and some lacing. Starts with juicy pineapple, mango and tangerine flavors. Finishes smooth and dank with orange, lime and pineapple flavors. Very nice.

Can at home. I like the can design. Nose is citrus and grassy. Tastes of grapefruit, melon, grassy, apricot, gooseberry. Lighter bodied. Fruity finish low bitterness.

Great Notion Unbalanced Breakfast 6.4%
I’ve gotta say this smells and tastes like a stack of blueberry pancakes with maple syrup. It had thick fluffy beige foam on a not so attractive amber brown body which makes it perfect for my metal glass. The coffee comes through in the finish but I’ve gotta say this is ba lazy Sunday breakfast in a glass. Great.
It’s been awhile since I’ve had something from Great Notion but I’ve gotta say this is among the best I’ve had from them. #keepbeerfun indeed.
