Description
Modern Times is a 30bbl production brewery and tasting room in the Point Loma neighborhood of San Diego. Modern Times is named after a beautifully crazy utopian community founded in 1850 (see “Modern Times was..” for the full explanation), and (almost) all of our beers are named after real utopian experiments or mythological utopias.

Dark brown. No head. Excellent chocolate, dark malt, figgy, toffeeish aroma, with big bourbon character. Lots of umami as well. It's got a big bourbon, nice light fruit, hints of alcohol, big fat bourbon and again the rich dark malts. Excellent.

22oz (thx, Jenn!) at SF.
Umami, American oak, moderately sweet. Taste is along the same lines, pretty good body, good barrel. Good one.

Poured from 650mL bottle. Near black with virtually no beige head. Mild bourbon with underlying woody note, fairly simple and clean, a bit of booze, some dark malts, decent.

A lot of vanilla, American oak, some chocolate, and a bit of meaty notes. The taste is a lot of vanilla, chocolate, and some American oak. Good one.

Dark brown. No head. The aroma has a lot of vanilla, the palate has a big rich malt, lots of chocolate, slight roast. There's a good barrel here, and some balancing vanilla sweetness. It's big, and it's rich. Dense, balanced. Excellent.

22 oz. bottle, pours black with a small tan head. Aroma brings out plenty of vanilla, bourbon barrels, and a touch of cocoa. Flavour has a wonderful vanilla bean character, plenty of bourbon barrels, dark sugars, molasses, and a touch of cocoa. Wonderful vanilla character that melds well with the bourbon. The usual super high-quality stuff. Fantastic.

Poured from 650mL bottle. Very dark brown with minimal beige head. Sweet vanilla, mild bourbon barrel, a touch boozy, some mild chocolate on the backend. Decent.

22 oz bottle, pours black with a small tan head. Aroma has plenty of chocolate, molasses, bourbon barrels, and a touch of sea salt. Flavour has plenty of chocolate, molasses, bourbon barrels, plenty of sea salt, and a touch of vanilla. I’m not sure the salt helps, but the barrel blend is fantastic and the adjuncts just add subtle complements. Excellent.

Cinnamon, some maple syrup, sweet, some fruity character. Full-bodied, moderately sweet, nice integration of flavors. Another nice creation of MT.

Dark brown. Big, rich aroma, with a lot of chocolate, light coffee, and a bit of white sugar. On the palate, it's got a hit of vanilla, alcohol, a woody barrel accent. There's a touch of cinnamon. Good rich character. It does have that chocolate note, with a touch of cinnamon, so that it goes in the direction of churro y chocolate. The barrel here is interesting, because it hits with some tannin but otherwise doesn't complement the rich chocolatey character.
