About
Modern Times is a 30bbl production brewery and tasting room in the Point Loma neighborhood of San Diego. Modern Times is named after a beautifully crazy utopian community founded in 1850 (see “Modern Times was..” for the full explanation), and (almost) all of our beers are named after real utopian experiments or mythological utopias.

Nice tropical nose with big amounts of citrus oil and peel. Soft mouth feel, soft carb. The wheat really a balances the hops in the end. The finish is dry, hops fade quite a bit.

Can from the lcbo. Dark brown pour, large brown head. Lots of roast, and a surprising amount of cocoa in the nose also. Obviously lots of coffee, but it's soft and not in your face. Low bitterness, lingering roast and coffee notes.

A lot of American oak, bold, black chocolate. Taste is along the same lines, oaky, some marzipan notes, moderately to highly sweet. Very nice!

Can from Beer Republic. Hmmm, could be fresher. Aroma is grainy malt, mild fruity hops, citrus, caramel, straw, tropical notes with grapefruit. Flavour is light to moderate sweet and mildly bitter with a fairly dry finish. Body is medium. Easy and pretty sessionable with fruity hops and grains.

Dark brown. No head. I'm getting some phenols up front on the nose. The palate, it's got big bourbon, again some headsy phenols. Thick body. It's a bit sticky, lots of barrel, and it's got a nice date character. 8 8 8 8 8

22 oz. bottle, pours black with a tiny tan head. Aroma is mainly a function of the bourbon barrels, with gentle brown sugar, molasses, and oak. Flavour is major barrel-heavy, with tons of bourbon barrels, vanillin, alcohol, and brown sugar. Very silky and oily, with intense bourbon on the finish. Clearly, Basil Hayden isn’t the finest bourbon, but the base beer is so good that the barrel-aging amplifies this beautifully.
