Description
The Budelse Brouwerij (Budels Brewery) is a family business that still values the traditions that have guided the brewery for centuries now. It's been at the very heart of the village of Budel in Brabant since 1870. Founded 150 years ago by Gerardus Arts as Brouwerij de Hoop (the Hope Brewery). Today, the fourth generation of the Arts family is at the helm and we are just as committed to the brewing as our ancestors.

It has been a long time since I tasted something from this brewery so let’s try this organic honey lager... Found in a Bioplanet store in Destelbergen. Medium thick, creamy, snow white head retaining quite well, over a deep golden beer, clear with a few tiny protein flakes here and there, calmly sparkling. Strange aroma of indeed a lot of sweet honey, but also cheese spread, buttermilk (diacetyl?), grass, ’Haagse hopjes’ if that rings a bell, iron, green apple, perhaps a hint of plastic. Rounded, soft onset with fairly low carbonation, sweet in a dull kind of way, clearly the honey speaking, but low fermentation fruitiness - unsurprisingly, considering this is a lager, of course. A sourish grainy accent comes up and along with a slightly bready pale malt sweetishness, dominates the middle phase, where a metallic hint also plays; the honey sweetness stays, but does not become really cloying or overpowering at any point. Mouthfeel is thin and a bit buttery. A soft and faint grassy hop bitterishness also appears late in the finish, fading away as quickly as it came; a weak honeyish sweetness is all what is left a few second after swallowing. Not a complete failure, but it is clear that honey works better in ales. If I were a pessimist, I’d say this is just another bland lager pimped with some extra ingredient and in that sense related to the chili lagers, tequila lagers and so forth, but it is quite ’honest’ and I cannot say it put me off as much as I had feared.
