Description
Outer Range Brewing is a community-driven microbrewery in the small mountain town of Frisco, Colorado. Co-founder and Head Brewer Lee Cleghorn’s love of craft beer began when he lived in Belgium as a teenager, where the first beers he ever drank were world-class Belgian ales. That background has served as inspiration for his IPAs, which showcase the ester profile of these traditionally hop-forward beers. A graduate of the American Brewers Guild Brewing Science and Engineering school in Vermont, Lee runs Outer Range with his wife and co-founder Emily, who is the Chief Marketing Officer and leads the brewery’s branding, marketing, and sales efforts. They met while homebrewing beer together ten years ago, and today, brew for and with a passionate community who lives at the intersection of craft beer and the outdoor mountain lifestyle.

Can - hazy gold with a thick, well-sustained lace - soft texture - moderate sweetness leads, followed by some spicy and dusty yeast, white grape - a tangy acidity through the middle, followed by some pear - finish is moderately bitter and medium dry, with some lingering acidity - I dig it.

Can - the addition of Tettnag is an interesting choice in this style, and adds a spicy and floral character that gives this a little more depth - some tangy citrus, camphor, white pepper - quite a spicy finish - I dig this one.

Can - turbid orange pour - lots of citrus and weedy dankness to this one, with a moderate sweetness through the middle that accentuates the citrus notes - a bit more assertively bitter than other hazy ipas, which is fine by me - some camphor and garlic on the back end lessen the enjoyment a bit - it’s decent.

Can - lightly hazy gold - the citra hops are actually what hit to nose first, so for a quick sec I thought, “did I just open one of their ipas instead?” - but some clove and pepper yeast character quickly follow - a bit syrupy and heavy for the style, with some baked apple and pear, followed by some quasi-messy yeast phenolics that get quite spicy near the finish, as the hop character swells I’m behind it - some background starchy character - overall a little messy and far too sweet.

On tap at Murphy's Tap House in Louisville. Pours cloudy yellow/golden with a small white head, good lacing. Citrus, grapefruit, herbal and pine. Good

Can - here I am, once again suckered into trying an Outer Range beer (I’ve got yet another one waiting in the fridge) - and once again, I’m trying one that reminds me why I keep coming back - because they sometimes nail it - much like the dipa version of this same beer, this is a lovely combination of citrus, white grape, and dankness, with a quenching acidity, with some finishing sweetness to balance - it is quite nice.

Lovely imperial stout, rich and deep yet also surprisingly easy-drinking. Loads of dark chocolate and anise are backed up by heavy notes of dark fruit, char, molasses, cascara, and caramel. Finishes dry and more medium-bodied than you'd expect. Tasty pint.

Can - hazy gold with a thick, fairly well-sustained head - taste is sugary sweet and a bit thin - some tropical and citric notes, white grape, herbal bitterness - but also some garlic cattiness, especially in the finish - tail end is sweetness and citrus, tasting a bit like orange juice - I want to digress here for a moment to say I don’t really “get” DDH hazy ipas - you take a style that’s aim is basically to make a hoppy beer with low bitterness, then you DDH that motherfucker, thus adding more bitterness? It just seems like a way to justify charging a lot more money by making the beer needlessly more expensive to makes- just sayin’.

Can - lightly hazy light amber - indistinct, malt-forward lager that does not know what it’s going for - it has the toasty maltiness of a Vienna, but also the caramelized malt richness of a Marzen - this would all be fine if the fermentation were clean, but it is not - it’s not so messy and unclean that I’d call it completely unenjoyable, but there’s so much good lager out there right now - and at 14 bucks for four pints, the quality to price point ratio is certainly lacking here.
