This one is labeled weizen, but I guess it is the same. Bottle. Rather sour peach aroma, some spice. Sour, almost lambic-like flavor, citrus peaches, creamy yeast. Not your typical hefeweizen. Nice body. Interesting sweet and sour balance, but strange. Too sour.

2008 version. Subtle yet deep aroma of alcohol, fruit, orange, hops, cascade, caramel. Dark amber with orange color. Absolutely no head. Strong, bold but austere flavor. Tons of hops, alcohol, with some dark fruit. Malty but not super sweet. Shockingly bitter hop finish. Tons of hops. Doesn’t really have the maltose to back it up. Burning hop and alcohol finish. Tastes very young. Should be better with aging and hop mellowing.

2008 bottle. Creamy, sweet nose of vanilla, coffee, chocolate, and a touch of fruits. Interesting and complex. Black with a frothy tan head. Flavor is sweet vanilla ice cream, with chocolate, cherries, and coffee, and a bit too much sour taste. Slightly thin in the mouth for such a big taste. Interesting, not exactly stout-like. Very nice, complex but maybe a bit too complicated. Strange finish. Much more vanilla in this one. 2007 7/4/7/3/14 Very solid stout base with a vanilla touch to it. Not overly sweet, good roasted dryness under the vanilla. Nice balance. Don’t really need the vanilla maybe? Well done, though.

On tap at GJBF, Osaka, 2008. A great, flavorful, rich stout. Strong, well roasted, rich and powerful but very well balanced. One of the best Japanese stouts I have had. Very rich and creamy.

Honey citrus, butter aroma. Medium dark gold color. Flavor also honey butter with lots of hops and good citrus and other fruits. Very bitter finish. Exactly what I like in a golden ale: good light flavor, great hops. Could drink it all night.

Bottle from Yamaoka. Pale, thin golden color with no head at all! Yeasty aroma, some barnyard funk (actually quite funky indeed), grass, citrus fruits, honey. Sweet, honey-like flavor, with a bit of funk, citrus and banana, hay and hops. Interesting and rather complex, though a bit too sweet. Palate is almost soapy, and under-carbonated for the style. Decent complexity worth trying, but not quite there yet

Bottle. Black with a rather low head. Great aroma of coffee, chocolate, dark fruits, roasted malts. Nice flavor of chocolate, coffee, molasses, smoke, and some cream. Complex and flavorful yery very smooth and creamy. No jolts. Not much bitterness something lingering pleasantly long after the swallow. Light for a porter, but rich and tasty.

Black with a medium, dark tan head. Bubbles darker than most. Fragrant, sweetish aroma of roasted malts, chocolate, some coffee, toffee, smoke. Very rich malt flavor, sweet indeed but not coying and well balanced. Good burnt malt dryness in the background, with lots of chocolate, molasses, plus a tangy, fruit-like (dark fruit) flavor, a bit of sour, that works to balance. Slightly smoky. Not terribly heavy in body, it goes down easy and seems refreshing. Tangy, sweet finish that turns to dry roasted malts, and the dry burnt flavor lingers long. A very interesting, very nice stout.

Limited release. Opaque black with a tall, fine, tan head. Sweet aroma of chocolate, caramel, dark fruit, and a touch of coffee with lots of milk in it. Slightly woody and smokey. Smokey flavor, with coffee, chocolate, roasted barley, wood, milk. Not as sweet as the nose, very well balanced. Very smooth, great mix of smoke, sweet, creamy, bitter. Very easy to drink. Finish is smoky, with slightly bitter taste of roasted barley. Well done. Maybe a tad too sweet overall.

Pitch black color, off white head. Cold coffee, dark fruit exude from the nose. Mouth is smooth, but perhaps too similar to cold coffee for some people’s liking, a touch of plums. Lingering coffee finish. More like a coffee stout than an export stout, but still very enjoyable.
