San Juan del Sur Cervecería, Avenida Mercado, San Juan del Sur, Nicaragua
Description
While traveling together on a number of surfing trips to Nicaragua during their college years, longtime friends and craft beer lovers Brendan DeBlois and Matt Greenberg recognized a dire need for freshly made craft beer in the “land of lakes and volcanoes.” The idea was hatched to bring craft beer to Nicaragua by building a brewpub in Nicaragua’s most famous beach town, San Juan del Sur. After leaving behind jobs in the U.S., they brought on board a third partner, Bobby Hottensen, and together worked on fine tuning a business plan. With the help of friends at Cisco Brewers in Nantucket, MA., Brendan worked alongside award-winning Brewmaster Jeff Hormer to create the recipes for “The Boom” IPA, “Nicarao” wheat beer, and “Popoyo” passion fruit ale. In early 2013, Brendan, Matt and Bobby moved down to Nicaragua to pursue the dream.

$2.79 bottle, TWG. Nicaragua via Old Bust Head. Oh this is heady... small pour, giant head. Pretty orange-amber, beige head. Caramel, nuts in the nose. Caramel, nuts, lime zest. Meh.

Pint at Parry's off Interquest. Pours a slightly hazy, yellow color, with a nice, frothy, off-white head. The nose is peach, hay, biscuit, butterscotch, and honeysuckle. Sweet and sugary, with a mellow bitterness. Light, fluffy, and clean. Quality and refreshing lager.

My first Nicaraguan beer. 8 oz can, $1.61, TWSP. Gold, mostly clear (hint of a haze), white head. Sweet corn, grasses in the nose. Corn, brown leaf, bread. Glad it's only 8 oz. I don't like this. Light carbonation.

Lots of caramel and some rust. Lots of sour lime. Not a lot to like here unfortunately. Tangy cloying finish. Bottle at Arepazone in DC.
