Description
Our name, Almanac, refers to the Farmer’s Almanac, a seasonality reference guide for farmers that has been published every year in the U.S. since 1818. Our motto, “Farm to Barrel”, was adopted to reflect our passion for brewing bold and sustainably sourced beers. Farm-to-barrel brewing is about selecting the best in sustainably sourced ingredients and using them to create beers inspired by the great brewing traditions of the world. We aim to create something uniquely Northern Californian.

Almanac was founded in 2010 by Damian Fagan and Jesse Friedman, two avid home-brewers who bonded over their mutual appreciation for California farmers markets. They set out to brew beers inspired by California’s rich agricultural bounty. After nearly seven years of partner brewing, we moved into our very own 30,000 square-foot production & aging facility located on a historic naval airbase on Alameda Island in San Francisco Bay.

I really enjoy this beer - especially as it warms in the glass. Pours an amber/burnt-gold that is clear with a white head. Head was full and frothy, but with large bubbles it dissipated quickly. Aroma of sweet grain and slight melonoidin with perfume and flowers. Taste is well balanced floral and malt, with some chewy bread and an orange background.

Draught at Blue Palms. Almost clear, amber/brown liquid with medium off-white head. Aroma of pepper, belgo yeast esters (banana, bubblegum), biscuit, light dark fruit, cereal and toast. A bit bland. Taste is dry and light to medium bitter with a malty backbone, some biscuits. Medium bodied with medium to high carbonation. Not too fantastic.

Bomber from the Folsom BevMo. Pours clear copper with a creamy/bubbly near beige head. Aroma is mildly earthy with hints of the lighter stone fruits. Over some lightly cooked caramel. Nice smell. Near med body. Flavor is earthy, with light fruit, and the cooked caramel suggests more as diacetyl/butterscotch. There is definitely some herb in this - not sure I taste anise, but arguable. With a little time this turns into a nicely earthy and reasonably bitter drink with fruit notes. The butterscotch, if there was any, gets lost. Nice ale.

Sample at the Central OH BA Tasting at From The Vine on 06/02/2012: Cloudy yellow-gold color with a medium white head that recedes steadily. Strings of lacing. The aroma consists of berries, malt and oak. Medium body with an oaky character and notes of blackberry, malt and a bit of funk. The finish is tart and fruity with a lingering berry aftertaste. Above average overall.
