Description
Our name, Almanac, refers to the Farmer’s Almanac, a seasonality reference guide for farmers that has been published every year in the U.S. since 1818. Our motto, “Farm to Barrel”, was adopted to reflect our passion for brewing bold and sustainably sourced beers. Farm-to-barrel brewing is about selecting the best in sustainably sourced ingredients and using them to create beers inspired by the great brewing traditions of the world. We aim to create something uniquely Northern Californian.
Almanac was founded in 2010 by Damian Fagan and Jesse Friedman, two avid home-brewers who bonded over their mutual appreciation for California farmers markets. They set out to brew beers inspired by California’s rich agricultural bounty. After nearly seven years of partner brewing, we moved into our very own 30,000 square-foot production & aging facility located on a historic naval airbase on Alameda Island in San Francisco Bay.

Can from The Davis Beer Shoppe. Pours clear, darkish, reddish ripe plum flesh with a moderate pale pink head. Aroma is blackberry, citrus and floral. Medium body. It’s tart sour. Four flavor, lemon zest, somewhat dominates blackberry. I think the lavender is discernible. Interesting beer.

Can from The Davis Beer Shoppe. Pours brassy gold with a large foamy white head that laced. Aroma of white berry, citrus and weed. Med body. Somewhat juicy but it's well towards dry. More than moderately bitter. Flavor is the aroma, xpt the citrus seems a bit orange. Some green melon. Weed persists.

Can in a restaurant at the Ferry Terminal in San Francisco. An early start with a rainy trip round Alacatraz meant I was soggy and tired and needed a beer. This is a good one, but it was served way overchilled which meant much was missing. Still good, but nothing brilliant.

Can from The Davis Beer Shoppe. Pours gold with a large creamy white head. Aroma is nectarine with some tropicals. Med body. It's very lush for a WC IPA. Not quite dry. Not the strong typical bitter, but pretty bitter. Flavor is nectarine and white grape. A hint of something like cantaloupe. A very pleasing flavor.

Reviewed from notes.
Bottle to tulip.
Appearance: clear yellow to glossy orange color with a quarter finger of white foamy head which dissipated nicely to leave some light lace
Aroma: peachy tart and sweet flesh & skin with some vinous to slightly oaky accents then light lemon to subtle grassy and funky tones rolling into some light Brett/sour notes
Flavor: sour to tart and underscored by the sweet with an ample extra tropical fruity addition; finishes peachy and tropical fruity with a slight funk to it
Texture: medium bodied, great sipper; light smoothness but also penetrable tart and sour lashings to the tongue as expected
Overall: a very nicely done fruited sour/tart ale I would return to.

Bottle to tulip.
Appearance: bright yellow to orange color with a subtle transparency about it and a finger's worth of white foamy head which dissipated nicely to leave a light lace
Aroma: passion fruit, coriander, sweet hay/grass, light lemon tart, sly funkiness, white grapes, and some Brett tones
Flavor: blends the prior noted aromas together in a great tart to sour to sweet character with a semi-dry finish of the passion fruit and white grapes
Texture: medium bodied, great sipper, smooth along the tongue, light tart/Brett stabbing the tongue as I expected it to
Overall: nicely done sour/tart fruit ale worth coming back to.
