Description
Bad Shepherd Beer Company is the brewery for Black Sheep Burrito & Brews restaurant and is located at their Charleston location. There are Black Sheep locations in Charleston and Huntington West Virginia. Eleven house-brewed beers on tap means that aside from flagship beer The Loud, and popular How Ewe Doin? Cream Ale, there are new brews constantly rotating through the other taps. A barrel program turns out a variety of sour ales and the occasional whiskey-barrel aged stout.

Can from weihenweizen: pours black with beige head. Aroma is coffee, industrial chocolate (from Europe), molasses. Taste is on the sweeter side, somewhat tangy, chocolatey and cake-like notes. Not bad.

Bottle, courtesy of mansquito. Pours bright orange. Brett, funk, tangerine, barnyard, marzipan, honey. Medium body. Perhaps a bit more heavy handed than I would like, but still a good beer.

Can from weihenweizen: pours gold with almost no head. Aroma is corn, some lemon. Taste is excessively corny, rather sweet, almost no bitterness. The extreme corn flavor is a real turn off for me.

On tap at Black Sheep Charleston. Slightly hazy golden with medium white head. Aroma is light malt, medium body, lower carbonation, and little lacing. Taste is light malt, Brett, and yeast. If a Brett saison and a malty tripel had a baby this would be it.

Bottle from Weihenweizen: pours clear gold with white head. Aroma is earthy, hints of grape, mildly funky. This kind of reminds me of my father's home brewed saisons (better certainly, but it has a certain feel). Taste is yeasty, and the brett is not overwhelming, but still adds that signature earthy touch. Booze is surprisingly well covered. Would not have in any world guessed the 8.9%. Still it is sweet and heavier than your average saison if you really think about it.
