Established in 1882
Brains beers were brewed in the Old Brewery on St Mary Street from 1882 right up to 1999 when operating from such a tight city-centre site became unviable. Fortunately, the Cardiff Brewery behind Cardiff Central station was up for sale and Brains production moved to a new home. However exciting new redevelopments in the centre of the city have led to a further move and the building of the brand new state of the art Dragon Brewery in Cardiff Bay which was opened in March 2019.

Pint at Owain Glyndwr, Cardiff. Some potato skins aside. A clear reddish copper pour with a beige thick head, much to my surprise (thought it'd have no head whatsoever.) Not really aromatic: just a hint of earth, a tad of clay, some read berries's distant memories and you're done. Dry, not too crisp mouthfeel (this is served at room temperature.) No big faults, though. Bitterish, medium-lasting finish. Forgettable.

Half pint at Rummer Tavern, Cardiff. An amber to orange, slightly cloudy pour with a fully-lacing, off-white, tight head that lasts forever. Aroma is tart apple reminds me of cider), caramel, quince, custard. No carbonation whatsoever. Dry onset, tart mouthfeel (again, pretty much like cider), medium bitter, very long finish. Boy, did I enjoy it.

Cask @ Royal George, Pembroke. Clear copper-amber with a glow and a creamy head. Malty aroma and taste, with a few caramels in the mix in the latter. Very traditional brew.
