Although our region produces many famous and less famous beers, we had to wait quite a while before Landen had its own beer. After some years of experimenting De Kale Ridders finally succeeded in making a unique beer. And since De Kale Ridders are not the only citizens of Landen that like a nice beer it was decided to commercialise it. The name of the beer refers to the rich Hesbaye region where important citizens used to be honoured with impressive burial tombs or tumuli. Even today these tumuli are visibly present in the landscape of Landen with amongst others the Borntombe in Walsbets, de Middelwinde tombe in Neerwinden, the Plattetombe in Waasmont and of course de Tombe of Pepijn in Landen.
The power and mystery surrounding these tumuli is also present in the beers produced by De Kale Ridders. The name is therefore not only a reference to the region of origin but also describes this beer brewed according traditional recipes and without any artificial additions.
De Kale Ridders use the most innovative brewing techniques, obtained through an intense collaboration with various labs of K.U.Leuven, KaHo St-Lieven and the Vlaams Instituut voor Biotechnologie (VIB). The recipes for our beers were optimised in a small own brewing installation. This installation had however insufficient capacity to serve the demand of friends and family, let alone that of the wider market. Therefore we looked to increase our production by renting capacity in another larger brewery. Already our first visit to the Proefbrouwerij convinced us. De Proefbrouwerij brews on small and middle large scale according the stringiest rules for hygiene, food safety and brewing techniques. Our collaboration with De Proefbrouwerij guarantees an end product of the highest quality and with a minimal variance between the different brews.

Flaska från demolenbeershop. Riktigt mörkt brun med lågt beige skum som snart försvinner. Doft av kraftig rostad malt, kaffe, choklad, lite tjära. Krftfull smak men väldigt väl balanserad. Stora ganska kärva smaker av tjära, torv, kaffe choklad möter en lätt sötma med lite lakrits, honung och mörkt bröd som mynnar ut i en torr men inte särskilt besk avslutning. Gediget och riktigt gott.

(Thx!) 330 ml. bottle sampled @ “2de Bierproeffestival van De Dijleschuimers”. Hazy golden, small white. Nose is weird metallic, rotting apple, butter, rotting funk, spoiled milk. Taste is rotting apple, brett, sugar, spoiled milk, spoiled butter. Rancid, nasty, whatever they used (brett I supposed) worked out horribly. Rotting butter candy body. Awful, yikes.

Bottle, labeled as ’Tumulus Experiment 2015’ . I do feel incomplete by the absence of any additional info on the label... what is the experiment about ? a weird new ingredient ? a prototype? A new hop ? I am left in the dark here... Pours unclear amber. small white head collides immediately. Smell is bitter, green apples, sharp, almost slightly sour, even, Taste is very weird as well. Loads of green apple, even some funk, not really sour but some brett-aspects do arise. To the dry side. Ok mf and carbo. Brett builds up and becomes very recognizable the more you drink. Waaw. that was unexpected ! Wish I had another one, to see how this ages !

Bottle @ home. Slightly unclear copper-golden color, medium sized off-white head that lasts for quite a while and leaves fair lacing. Smell and taste both remind me of a beer-cider mix I once tasted. It reminds me of yeast, apples, grapes, lightly malts. Medium body and carbonation. A bit strange but I don’t dislike it.

330 ml. bottle sampled. BBF 20/05/17. Lightly hazy amber orange, creamy faintly off-white head. Nose is odd, intense vegetables, heavily oily mixed with some caramel & toffee not too nice. Taste is metallic, heavily oily caramel mixed with vegetables, oily almost cough medicine, herbal, medicinal, lots of butter, vegetable oil. Body is vegetable oil & some butter. Nope doesn’t work too well for me. It doesn’t feel right. First beer made at De Proef out probably hundreds that doesn’t feel entirely right to me. They have made beers that were very far from exiting or to nice but always perfectly & flawlessly on demand even if they were dull ignorable fare for me but this makes me wonder slightly. Confused about this one.

The stout from the Kale Ridders, probably the ’official’ version of the (hobby brewed) Nocturnus they offered on a ZBF a few years ago, with thick and lacing, dense and creamy, light beige head and very dark chestnut brown colour, as good as black. Aroma of coffee grounds, baker’s chocolate and fondant, cured meat and even a hint of beef broth, dried banana, walnuts, black peppercorns, clear iron, some soapy wheat, parsley, bayleaf, hint of sweet port wine. Restrained candied sweetness in onset, banana, bubblegum even, but paired with a ’deep’ and dull kind of sourishness probably coming from the wheat, soft carbo, thick and oily mouthfeel, caramelly and chocolatey malt flavours nicely intermingled and leading to a more coffeeish roasted bitterness in the end, where earthy, herbal hop bitterness helps to create drought; a warming glow of whisky-like alcohol appears in the end as well. Pretty straightforward, yet thick and strong enough to be close to an imperial stout; lacks some complexity though.

Bottled@Tuulensuu, Tampere (old backlog). Murky reddish brown colour with a mediumsized off-white head, that leaves some lace. Aroma is mild roasted malts, some chocolate, a bit alcohol as well as some spicy yeast to it. Flavour is chocolate, roasted malts, mild liquorice, some spices as well as a mild touch of alcohol to it. Quite bodied, but still a quite simplistic stout.
