Description
Renaissance brewing was established in 2005 when experienced brewers Andy Deuchars and Brian Thiel purchased the lease on the historic Grove Mill in Blenheim. Andy and Brian, both natives of Southern California, had one goal in mind - to produce stunning beers in a region more renowned for the excellence of its wines. We are committed to using local ingredients and are one of the pioneers of craft brewing in New Zealand.

(500mL bottle from the LCBO) Pours cloudy dark brown with a big rocky tan head that faded slowly and left lace. Aroma of rich toffee, raisin, nuts, a bit of bread. Initial flavour toffee, caramel, raisin and prune, sweetish. Mid-palate has more chocolate malt, on the finish some brown sugar and a bit of anise. Finish lightly bitter, dry and somewhat metallic. Overly carbonated and light-moderate mouthfeel for the style. Not the freshest, but also not quite as rich as I hoped it would be.

My GF found this for me at the LCBO (not even in their system yet). Pours a very dark brown colour showing very little red highlights. Its head is deep beige, creamy and gives out good lacing. Nice blended cocoa aromas with roasted malt and vanilla to tones down things. Wet mouthfeel that felt thin at first, but starts getting some medium-body after the last pour. Mostly roasted malts for flavours with maybe a little hints of chocolate in the finish. Goes down easy for a stout, but was expecting more from this one.

Aroma has some cocoa and hints of toffee typical to English Ales. Flavour is dry with some cocoa and rather roasted malt. Palate is foamy and too high on CO2. Decent.
