Description
Aloha. That’s how most conversations begin here. It’s also how many of them end. But “Aloha” doesn’t just mean hello and goodbye and love and welcome. It means more than a word can express. It’s a feeling. A way of life. “Aloha” is the idea that we are all connected to everyone and everything around us and that true joy is found in respecting this connection. And it’s in this aloha spirit that the Kona Brewing Company was founded back in 1994 by Cameron Healy and his son Spoon Khalsa. They combined their love of Hawaii and its pristine, natural beauty with their fondness for delicious, local brews, and lucky for us, their dream lives on more than 20 years later.

So try a few of them. And join us in our pursuit of aloha.

Bottle pours a medium amber witha small off white head. Spotty lacing. Aroma is of mild malts and a little spicy hops. Flavor is similar. Enough hop bitterness, but not much real flavor. Decent feel and moderately carbonated. Pleasant lingering bitterness.

Bottle: Has some malty tones that get a little bit sweet with some light hops. The flavors compete against each other a bit. Finishes well to bring this lager up to average status.

Color is darker than expected, a solid amber with a thin off-white head. Smell is fairly faint, but hints at citrus and some floral hoppiness. Taste features a solid hop whallop up front, finishes smooth with a sweet malt and light citrus feel. Simple taste, but well done.

Hazy amber-orange body, thin off-white head. Citrusy, bready, earthy and somewhat bitter aroma. Delicate malt sweetness, with notes of caramel and toast, balance the citrusy, earthy hops finish. Maltier and sweeter than most APAs. Thanks, Hezron.

Assume a 2005 bottle, from Liquor Mart, consumed on 10/13/2005. Clear, copper-gold-yellow. Some bubbles. One finger white head seems well retained initially. Smells of a typical pale lager: vanilla, creamed corn. Some metallic notes as well. Bits of graininess intersparsed with grass. Some cat urine. Flavor is strikingly similar to white grape juice at first. Some grass, parsley, more white grape juice. Not a poor body to it, just dosent taste right. Retro pale grains. Mouthfeel is ok, not overcarbonated. Reminds me of bottled Russian pale lagers. Just too much cat piss and sweetness reminiscent of white grapes. Nice copper sheen shows that there is more than just pale/pils malt in here. Hops are skunked badly. Not my idea of the type of beer that should be exported. I feel bad scoring it low, as I bet this would be really good fresh on draught and I know this hasnt travelled well. But it’s the brewer’s choice to export this thing all the way from Hawaii to Colorado, so I feel justified in holding them to it.

[At GABF 2004] A pitch black beer with a lasting beutiful brown head. The aroma is very lighlty roasted - I’m a bit disappointed in the lightness of the aroma. The flavor is sweet with hints of coffee, and a nice roasted end. The mouthfeel is very smooth.
