Description
Aloha. That’s how most conversations begin here. It’s also how many of them end. But “Aloha” doesn’t just mean hello and goodbye and love and welcome. It means more than a word can express. It’s a feeling. A way of life. “Aloha” is the idea that we are all connected to everyone and everything around us and that true joy is found in respecting this connection. And it’s in this aloha spirit that the Kona Brewing Company was founded back in 1994 by Cameron Healy and his son Spoon Khalsa. They combined their love of Hawaii and its pristine, natural beauty with their fondness for delicious, local brews, and lucky for us, their dream lives on more than 20 years later.

So try a few of them. And join us in our pursuit of aloha.

Flesje thuis gedronken. Goudgeel helder bier met weinig schuim dat snel weg trekt. Aroma van tropische vruchten, passievrucht. De smaak is zeer (te) hoppig. Nasmaak is bitter.

Clear golden and lightly peach tinted body with a very small, single centimetre tall pure white head. Aroma of grass, hay, flowers, light citrus, a dash of resin and way more dry notes without much bitter hops at all. Light to Medium-bodied; Strong rich dry and grassy flavours dominate with a ton of herbal and very floral elements that do show through, but none of the more tart or fragrant hibiscus really comes through at all to me, which is sad, since I do love the flower. Aftertaste shows a bit of the alcohol with some of the effervescence and dryness that they were trying to get at with this beer, but not much of the floral and hibiscus elements here, either. Overall, a decent beer that shows okay, but is split between what style it's trying to go after - a brut, an imperial ipa, a herbed/spiced ipa, and none of them really fit the bill, in a perhaps unflattering way, with this being more like an East Coast IPA than anything else, I fear. I sampled this twelve ounce can, purchased from Total Wine in Springfield, Virginia on 20-October-2019 for US$1,99 sampled at home in Washington after Congresswoman Tulsi Gabbard dropped out of the Presedential Race - from her home district on Hawai`i [island], Hawai`i, USA, I sampled this one to across this entire fine country where she represents here in Washington, on 19-March-2020.

Bottle, 0.355l. Cloudy copper pour, thin soapy white layer on top. Minimal lacing on the glass. Strong pineapple on the nose, subtle peach in the background together with some herbal notes. Thin to medium body, soft carbonation. Moderately fizzy mouthfeel, average texture, lightweight but slightly chewy nonetheless. Bittersweet combo with more sweetness coming through in the aftertaste. Aroma feels a bit subdued at first but it does come forward a bit more later on, it builds up so to speak. Fruity aroma dominated by notes of pineapple, grapefruit and peach. Caramel malt in the background, some floral touches. Lingering hop bitterness, a bit dry. Medium herbal spiciness. Hints of alcohol, nicely balanced. Medium to long lasting finish, dry and fruity, lingering sweet and bitter notes. Not bad. Solid fruity IPA.

Thin body, medium but lively carbonation. Light mouthfeel and texture, a bit watery. Bittersweet taste with a touch of tart. Fruity tropical aroma, citruses, herbs and grass. Mild yeasty, eastery, subtle floral touches. Short lasting finish, fruity, mild herbal spiciness. Good thirst quencher but pretty much average overall.

Slightly darker than a lager, thin head, nice ale nose. Spicy, caramel, tropical fruit, dried fruit, strange for a pale ale. Ah I see: brewed with pineapple. Strong pineapple in the mouth, but not very sweet. A bit bitter, astringent lingering aftertaste. Interesting but could have been better.
