Deep amber coloured body with a copper glow and a strong ruby highlight with a dense long-lasting tan head. Aroma of malt, caramel and a touch of nuts, all fairly strong, but nothing intense at all. Medium-bodied; Assertive nutty and malty flavour with some caramel and a touch of spice behind. Aftertaste shows some minor dryness and a little caramel burnt finish. A good beer and something interesting from a beer perspective - nothing amazing, but a beer that isn’t too typical nowadays. I sampled this twelve ounce bottle purchased from Merchant’s in Dearborn, Michigan on 30-July-2010 sampled at home in Washington on 12-October-2010.

On tap at a local restaurant. Pours amber red with a light tan head. Aroma of light sweet biscuit. Flavor is mildly sweet, toasty biscuit with a touch of honey, a little like rye, along with a bit of hoppiness and maybe a bit metallic. Pleasant flavors overall, but pretty light.

on tap-pours a thin off white head and amber color. Aroma is sweet medium malt. Taste is sweet medium malt-caramel, hint of hops (some citrus?).

draft at brewpub - Well, at least I got to try a style that’s new to me. That partially makes up for the mostly bland beers I had in my sampler. It pours amber with a thin head. The aroma is roast caramel malt. The flavor is roast malt with some mild hops that shows up mostly in the finish of this medium bodied beer. It’s enjoyable but pretty average.

Sampled at the 2nd annual Michigan Winter Beer Festival, Lansing. As expected, a leafy, grassy beer with bready, toasty malts. Like jumping into a pile of fall leaves...and perhaps chewing on them. Sharp bite. An uncommon style, it was good to see an example at the fest.

2004 draught at MBG Festival. Pours a pretty average straw yellow, with a hint of rusty orange tinges. Small white head, rapidly disipating. Aroma has some metal notes, light root flavored hops and no real sweetness. Flavor is dry, earth-like, hints of metal and some sour yeast notes but lacks enough malt to give this beer any real balance or body. Medium to medium light bodied, moderate carbonation. Lightly stale, old bready finish, no crisp lager bite. Disappointing, but yet, a tough style, so I’m not really offended and will definitely keep drinking their beer. Rerate on draught 12/2004 at the brewery Exactly as I remember, no attempt to add more malt or change the recipe it seems.
