Can. Pours a clear golden hue with a medium white head. A soft bready and floral nose. Toast, oranges, Belgian yeast. Damn, this is spectacular. Dough. Smooth fresh hops. Give me 10 pints of this. I'm as guilty as anyone, rating hedonistically and chasing high ABV. But this 5% beer is killer.

2022 pint can pours with a deep dark mahogany colored body that supports a thin tan head of foam. The aroma offers up molasses nuanced spicy black licorice, some of the boozy barrel treatment and then molasses drizzled dates, prunes and figs. Nice. The taste delivers a pleasing blend of sweet molasses, spicy black licorice, spicy anise too and then a modest whiskey like barrel booziness. To midway the sweet dark fruity esters begin to be heard with notes of prunes, dates and figs. The moderate bitterness, sweet fruity esters and barrel treatment are all in a fine balance allowing for these deep rich flavors to come across with a wonderful harmony. Great sipper.

A pint can that was bought at the close-by HEB, glad they offer decently priced singles. I’m using a chunky, old style beer glass today, right kind for a pilsner I think. The appearance is a clear, vibrant yellow liquid with a sticky, all white head. The smell is grainy, not much beyond that. And the drink is essentially pilsner. Grain again, lemon, a slight bit of metallic something, water, but ended by a nice bitterness. I get more of a sense of fullness than with other pilsners. Good in the style.

Somehow the local HEB continues to get some surprising beers to sell. This time it is an IPA from Ex Novo. I will point out that the can is great looking, hope the brew keeps up. Using a shaker glass, I open the 16 oz can and tilt into the glass. The appearance is totally transparent, a gold-yellow body with a fleeting, solidly white head. I smell a combination of tropical and pine, an interesting beginning. The taste certainly veers towards old-style IPA with plenty of resin, citrus, malt, a bit of mango and earth. Decently bitter, nice. Wish I was at the Balloon Fiesta, watching the night glow and sipping this beer with friends.
