I am not sure how different this is from their "oatmeal saison," if at all, but they are marketing it as a different beer, and it seems different from my experience with that beer - this has a lot let yeast character - in fact, it is hard to detect any saison elements at all - the character here is mostly from the malts, both in the aroma and the flavor - nose is fairly sweet, with quite a bit of the rye, with an almost whiskey-like character - also some notes of raisin and toffee - flavor is fairly similar - some rye, dark bread, raisin - perhaps the faintest hint of spicy phenolics, but mostly sweet and one-dimensional.

Tap at the brewery -labeled "Prim and Porter" - dark ruby pour - off-white lace - nicely done porter, with an ample mix of dry, roastiness, cookie/dough notes, anise, cocoa, with a nice burton-ish bite on the end - a touch of raisin, molasses, and smoke as well - soft texture, dry finish - nice.

Tap at the brewery - hazy light gold - frothy lace - tastes light a cream ale, lager hybrid - creamy texture, lightly tart acidity, perhaps a touch of acetaldehyde - notes of wheat, creamed corn - redeemed late by some grassy hops and a mineral bite - meh.

Tap the brewery - fairly well done scotch ale, with deep, rich malt character - flavors of toffee, plum, raisin, treacle - moderate balancing acidity - some dark bread notes in the finish - missing the smoky phenols you want in the style, but complex enough to sustain itself without these.

Tap at the brewery - oh hot damn - this is how you do black ipa - sessionable, dry as can be - intensely roasty without being astringent or acidic - moderately smoky - potent, green hopiness that plays well off the malt character - nailed it.

Tap at the brewery - well done esb - hazy orange - very dry and crackery malt base, with a healthy dose of rye creating some spice and earthy whiskey notes - moderate bitterness that is perhaps a bit high for the style, but still quite good.

(Update - previously a 4.0 - just had some of a newer batch - the Brett was much more developed and the hops character was a little dulled, so it wasn’t as snappy and vibrant as previous batches - still good, but this brewer clearly has to work on consistency) Tap at the brewery - this is how you do brett ipa - lightly musky aroma, with bright, floral and peppery hops - lean, clean, medium dry and snappy malt base - strongly citric and moderately bitter hops that are complimented well by moderate pineapple brett notes - the brett also provides a lightly earthy funk - finish is dry, flinty, but with lingering mango notes - excellent attenuation and a bright, tongue-prickling acidity - excellent!
