The Brouwerij van Vlaanderen was founded in 2002 to celebrate 700 years of the Battle of the Golden Spurs. Initially, in 2002, the beer was commissioned at De Proefbrouwerij in Hijfte, but after a year production was transferred to the Van Steenberge brewery in Ertvelde. In 2016, the brand was transferred to a company in Wielsbeke.

Bottle shared. Pours clear brown with a small tan head. Aroma of caramel, dark fruits, malt and licorice. Flavour is over moderate sweet and light to moderate bitter. Light medium bodied with soft carbonation.

Clear orange beer, big fluffy aery white head, little stable. Aroma: fruity, some citrus, little peppery, sweet. MF: soft carbon, medium body. Taste: sweet start, some honey, orange peel, bit oxidized. Aftertaste: sourish, spicy, some coriander, orange peel, soft bitterness.

Mid brown colour with big foamy head. Bread dough aroma. Intense carbonation. Really dry with a spicy, yeasty edge.

Tripel in this politically compromizing series - but I guess you’d have to be Belgian to grasp that political meaning. Anyway: a stereotypical tripel with a thick, off-white head and pale golden blonde colour; malt sweetness and apply estery fruitiness prevail, some coriander, phenolic too; straightforward taste, malt sweet, subdued fruity onset, spicy ’Van Steenberge yeastiness’, mild hop bitter finish. Totally redundant - it tastes as if Van Steenberge made a cheaper version of their own Augustijn. Not to mention the metallic undertone. This beer company is quality-wise not an addition to Belgian beer culture (carefully put) and is primarily motivated by politics, that much is certain. No more Flemish lions for me.

The dark one in this series, another Flemish nationalist beer, but let’s keep politics aside and taste this objectively. Dark brown with ruby hue, stable head, light caramelly maltiness, sweetish, estery, brief hop bitterisness in the finish and clearly metallic with clear iron in the nose, lacking body. Utterly boring and cliché, like the others in this series.
