Description
Terrapin Beer Co. was born when two brewers met while working together at a microbrewery in Atlanta. Spike and John felt they could make a contribution to the burgeoning Southeastern craft beer scene. Realizing that anyone could make another basic pale ale, brown ale, or stout, Spike and John set their sights on creating beers unlike any that were currently available in the Southeast.
Unique beers needed a unique location and what better place than Athens, GA? Home to the University of Georgia, Athens has a rich culture of music, food, classic Southern charm, and more than a little eclectic attitude. Spike and John knew from the start that the Classic City would be Terrapin’s home.
The guys introduced Terrapin’s first beer, Terrapin Rye, in April of 2002. While still available only on draft and only in downtown Athens, this sole offering won the American Pale Ale Gold Medal at the 2002 Great American Beer Festival. At only six months old, Terrapin had arrived in style!
History rolls forward and so too has Terrapin. These days John and Spike are enjoying Terrapin’s 40,000 square foot brewing facility, 100 BBL brewing system, and are taking full advantage of the space to continue bringing innovative and exciting brews to craft beer lovers. The brewery now has a portfolio of 5 year-round beers, 4 Seasonal Sessions beers, the Monster Beer Tour collection of high-gravity selections, and the Side Project series of one-time brewing improvisations, as well as several Special Releases and collaborations annually. Terrapin has developed a reputation for high-quality beers that push the boundaries of creative brewing and has garnered several awards both in the U.S.A and internationally.

Hazy yellow-orange color with a thin white head that evaporates quickly to a wispy film. Spotty lace. Lemony aroma with some wheat and tea notes. Light body with flavors of mildly tart lemon, wheat, tea and biscuit malt. The finish is fruity with a lemony aftertaste. Slightly above average overall.

Bottle. Pours a pretty opaque mahogany with a large bubbly yet creamy tan head that dissipates quite slowly leaving good lacing. Aroma is loaded with coffee, espresso, mocha, latte. Flavor is medium sweet, light plus bitter loaded with coffee. Medium plus body. Rich and good if you are a coffee lover.

Pretty sure this is rum or they added literally rum to it. Hints of chocolate but so much damn rum. Not bad but not subtle, and I'm not much of a rum guy. If you like rum, buy this. -.25 for booze preference.

Can from vintage. Looks like a pale ale with a decent head, 3 Smells a little fruity, perhaps like mild fruit orange perfume. Taste is rather rude and medicinal up front. Lots of astringent bitter bite on this one, not sure if its hops an'that but its there fer sher. Perhaps the bitterness is like chewing on a very unripe green citrus rind, whew. Quite in yer face in the middle. End with a whallop up the palate with a straight up arse. Not impressed. In the end, at least its got decent carbonation.

When I pop the can I swear I can feel a tart nose. Makes my mouth water. Pour is a very nice hazy on vanilla yellah eye. Massages the palate with tons of cutting co2, very very nice. Yes, such a friendly pleasant tart beer, yet does not come across like flavored soda water. Very civilized, very friendly, very well mannered, like a good Berliner citizen should be! I really like this stuff, keeps your mouth watering from beginning to end. Much better than expected, probably because I thought it was going to be a tea flavored thang bit its really a berliner , thank you. Could easily drink another can of this enjoyable stuff, yea! As good as any real old country berliner, from across the sea.

Fruit stout with chocolate truffles apparently, from Terrapin in Athens, Georgia. Thanks to sebletitje for sharing. Large-bubbled and loose, mocha beige, open head over a black beer with hazy burgundy edges. Aroma of bitter chocolate (much more than the sweet milk chocolate I would associate with chocolate truffles), soy sauce, fried oyster mushrooms, green tree leaves and green coffee beans, red raspberries (even a ‘raspberry bush’ effect), balsamico, walnut. Sweetish fig- and dried prune-like impressions with a pronounced but very enjoyable umami effect (soy sauce) as well as the inevitable sour raspberry tone; soft carb, full, oily body. Nutty and toffeeish malt profile which shifts over chocolatey towards coffeeish but does not become heavily roasted bitter; a ‘green’ effect colours the finish while a softly tart raspberry effect as well as some raspberry fructose sweetness keep accompanying the palate. Chocolatey malts enhanced by the chocolate truffles linger in the background, highlighted by bourbon-ish, warming alcohol. Typical experimental U.S. style craft stout, interesting and enjoyable, but still it feels as if the contrasting flavours here seem to clash a bit – as is so often the case in fruit stouts and fruit porters.
