Bottled from Shenandoah. Pours a cloudy yellow color, medium white head. Aroma is almost exactly like a raspberry syrup. Flavor is well, not as good at the aroma, but a decent raspberry flavor.

Rerate 11/15/09: 12 ounce bottle from the brewery, Alexandria Ale label. Pours a hazy orange color with a moderate creamy head. Decent head retention and lacing. Aroma of citrus hops, malt syrup, apples. Taste is leafy, citrus hops with a toffee background. Thin-medium bodied. 5/3/5/3/11
Original Rating: 12 ounce bottle from Whole Foods in Charlottesville, VA, reviewed in late 2007. Pours a bronze color with nice sudsy head. Aroma of apples (can you tell its from Virginia?). The taste is a little on the bitter side, and not very complex. Virginia has much better to offer. 6/3/5/3/11

Sampled at the Capitol City Carnival 2007. This was fantastic. Hazy dark black body with a large frothy brown head. Sweet chocolate and sugar aroma. Very sweet chocolate flavor, lots of sugar. This actually tastes like a chocolate donut.

Bottle. I’m no expert on Schwarzbier (I didn’t even know two of the beers I was drinking were of that style) so I can’t really say how good this one fits into the category. That being said the beer was a little roasty, caramel and chocolates. Taste was slightly bitter and pleasant, slight watery taste, but that could just mean the beer was light (I don’t know the alcohol content).

Draft at Dr. Dremos. Light in color. Pleasant aroma of blackberries. Flavor is a little tart, but I suppose I was expecing more of a berry flavor in this one. Decent, but I probably wouldn’t have this one again.

Draft at Dremos. Dark brownish color, with small creamy head. Aromas of roasted nuts with a hint of chocolate. Perhaps like most SBC beers they can be hit or miss, I thought this one was really great.

Draft at Dremos. Golden color, with thin white head. Nice floral and citrus aromas, with a nice fruit and hoppy flavor. A certainly respectable example of a IPA.

Bottle. Pours a dark copper/redish haze. Virtually no head whatsoever. Aroma is that of malts, figs, and juniper berries. Flavor is nothing short of fantastic, near perfection sweet, malty, creamy with butterscotch and junipers. Alcohol is pretty well masked.

Bottle. Redish-orange color, with a small head. Aroma of sweet musk. Powerful slightly roasty malt flavor. A little on the weaker side, but it’s alright. The "Redneck Ale" at Dremos was superior to the bottled version. The current updated rating represents this version over the bottled version.
