About
South East Brewing Company are the proud makers of Golden Axe Cider, KAIJU! Beer, and Coaster Beer.

Nat and Callum Reeves are the duo behind KAIJU! Beer and Golden Axe Cider. After releasing a Double IPA back in 2013 that not only got a lot of attention, but single handedly caused a statewide shortage of Simcoe hops, the brothers quickly established themselves as the original hopmasters. Since then, they have been very busy growing the KAIJU! Beer range of hop-driven beers, all made at the brewery in Dandenong South, Victoria.

Note: 2013-2015 brewed at Cavalier.

Can. Moderately hazy golden amber with an inch of white head. Intense but floaty rather than punchy tropical fruit aroma with lychees, pineapple, some peach and orange, light bread and hints of spices. So it tastes. Perhaps there's a slightly toasted edge to the malt. Sweet tropical fruit but it gradually sharpens a little towards the moderately bitter finish. I guess I would have liked it a little cleaner but that wouldn't be what this is. Smooth with some majesty. Very good stuff.

I reckon this beer wouldn't sell nearly as well without the label. It's a bit rich to call it a tropical pale ale in my book, but it's pleasant enough. There are some aromas of pineapple, mango and stone fruit, and a nice bitterness in the mouth, but it doesn't scream tropical.

Can (Cellars Bentleigh). Clear golden amber with an inch of white head. Wafty broad citrus aroma with grilled mango, some rubbed herbal notes, light bread. Some sweetness before bitterness grips. Richer bread initially than expected from the aroma, then grape and mango, then citrus, then herbaceous pine and firm bitterness. I thought after Space Lord that this would be back on more familiar ground for Kaiju, but this - whilst still very much a sledgehammer - is more precisely wielded than previously. Very good indeed.

Can. Almost opaque orange with a good cm of white head. Aroma of wintery oranges, lime, some mango and lychees lurk behind. Cleaner and drier than expected and thence less creamy and juicy. Citrus is quite punchy but is narrower; the other fruit gets lost. Moderately bitter. Nudges up on hop burn but is OK.

Can: Poured a deep unclear orange with a beige fast dissipating head. Aroma is fruity and floral, hoppy, citrus, rich malts. Taste is juicy hops, bitter, chewy, citrus, grapefruit, malt backbone, little piney and resinous in the finish.
