Description
Old Chimneys Brewery was started in 1995 by Alan Thomson, a Master Brewer who celebrated 40 years of brewing in 2017.
Located in Market Weston on the Norfolk/Suffolk border, Old Chimneys has achieved an enviable reputation for beer quality. The flagship brand,
Good King Henry Special Reserve, has for 8 years been the highest rated English beer on ratebeer.com
Alan ceased brewing at Market Weston in April 2019 to concentrate on collaborative brewing with top quality brewers in the UK and abroad,
starting with Grain (Norfolk), Northern Monk (Leeds) and Wylam (Newcastle).
The regular Good King Henry is now brewed under Alan’s supervision at Grain Brewery. The strength has been increased to 10% abv, and for the first time in 20 years it is available in KeyKeg as well as cask.
Changed to a client brewer as of 2019 on Brewver as Alan continues to brew elsewhere with the Old Chimneys name, mostly at Grain Brewery.

Bottle at cgarvieuk's, vintage 2015 vs vintage 2009. Pours black. Aroma is toffee, caramel, barrel, nuts, coffee. Much more oak in the younger one. Body is heavy, strong but not super boozy, barrel, little carbonated sourness, intense, but mostly diabetes. Rich for sure, but also not as gracefully balanced as the GKH 2009 I just had. Still a very good beer, of course. Older gets better, but the flatness ruins some of the experience. Maybe there is a sweet spot in between?

Bottle at Craigs, many thanks, very little head, opaque dark brown color, aroma of dark bread, waffle, rich chocolate and some oakiness, lots of dark chocolate in flavor with prunes, soya and oakiness enveloping it all, strong but extremely mellow sweetness. Balanced and really really good.

Bottle at Craigs, medium bubbly creamy head, clear oxidized red color, aroma of wood, overipe oranges and minerals, flavor of wood and citrus with a noticable alcoholic presence, a hint of sweetness, a bit heavy. Nice, but nothing more.

Bottle from the dregs run, cheers Craig. Pours hazy amber with a thin off-white head. Aromas of toffee, marzipan. Taste is bitter up-front, then burnt sugar, toffee. Boozy. Burnt sugar dominates the finish.
