Description
Maui Brewing Company was founded by Garrett Marrero and Melanie Oxley. They started as a single brew-pub, a small restaurant that served its own locally brewed beer in January 2005. Demand for the beer outgrew the space available in the brewpub and in 2007, Maui Brewing Company started producing and packaging beer out of a separate production facility. In 2012 Marrero and Oxley opened yet another larger production facility, which increased their capacity from 18,000 barrels of beer to almost 40,000 barrels.

Can, which says brewed with Pineapple Juice, sounds like a fruit beer to me (listed as a Wit right now). Pours with a murky golden body and a small white head head that fades. Aroma of coriander, wheat, canned pineapple, cardboard (not oxidation), husky grains, medium esters. Taste is pineapple, husky, wheat, cardboard (not oxidation), corn nuts, and lavender. Medium to light bubbles. Dry finish. Not as good as any of Maui’s other canned offerings in my opinion.

Can from South Bay Drug. Pours really hazy gold with a 2 finger coarsely foamy off-white head. Aroma has that acidic pineapple note. Medium with coarse carbonation. Flavor is pretty much pineapple. Not sugary canned, not overripe fresh, but that acidic not quite ripe stuff. Along with some brown sugar notes. It’s a bit wheaty, but not enough to be bothersome. Imperialize it and age it in a fresh acacia barrel. Bavoom!

Can. An unclear amber beer with an off-white head. The aroma has strong notes of hops as well as notes of malt, grass, and grapefruit. The flavor is sweet with notes of malt and hops - the latter lending it notes of grass and grapefruit, leading to a dry and bitter finish. Nice.

12 oz can into lager glass. Thanks, Brenn79. Aroma is pineapple, honeyed cornbread, citrus powder drink. Very aromatic for this style--I was expecting blandness. Pours a clear to just slightly hazy gold hue with a thick two-finger head with nice retention. Leaves a constant scrim and collar of foam after a few minutes when it dissipates. Taste is sweet and a little salty. A little fruity and much more interesting than most examples of this style. Medium to high carbonation with a medium body. Extremely quaffable beer made for the beach.

Can thanks to Wavers1. Pours brownish black with creamy tan head. Nose is roasted malts, chocolate, light coffee and hint of coconut. The toasted coconut really comes out in the taste and has a very strong presence combined with chocolate and roasted dark malts. I don’t really like coconut, but I thought this was a very tasty and solid porter.

Can at Brewforia, Meridian, ID Clear dark brown with a small quick off-white head. Sweet chocolaty malty aroma with some totsie rolls thrown in. Tastes roated and chocolay. The coconut is not overpowering, which is nice. Novelty flavors like that tend to be front runners instead of a supporting role. This one is nice. Lacking much of porters generaly have. A touch st sour acidic character. A litle sweet and very drinkable.

Out of a can at Brewforia Meridian,ID. Very hazy yellow orange with a nice full pillowy white head. Fresh zesty citrus aroma. Sweet light malt flavor with a slightly woody bitterness. Not much of that fresh citrus flavor that the aroma advertised. Carbonation feels right. Pretty lively. Lingering sticky resinous hop character but it seems a bit underattenuated.

12 oz can into shaker. Thanks, Brenn79. Nice grapefruit and citrus powder in the nose. Pours a hazy gold with a thick pillowy head full of big bubbles. Taste is very standard for this style; there are no diversions or off-notes. That means it’s tasty, yet nothing special. It’s mostly hoppy bitter with just a touch of malt sweetness. Carbonation is pretty high for this style. Some purists might gripe about this, but it doesn’t bother me. Medium body. Overall, a tasty IPA, but nothing I would go out of my way to buy.

12 oz can into English pint. Thanks, Brenn79. Aromas of chocolate milk, coconut, bread, espresso--wonderful. Pours a deep deep brown with reddish tints. Has a nice thick long-retaining head that leaves creamy lace. Taste is sweet and a little sour with a hint of bitterness. There’s an offnote of aluminum present at first but it dissappears quickly. Carbonation is low to medium, but it’s not to the detriment of the beer. Perfect for this style. Creamy mouthfeel. Very tasty. I wish the coconut was more prominent, though--woah, hold on--towards the end of the glass, it comes out more. Bravo. Re-rate: the appearance went downhill 3/4 of the way through the glass: all traces of foam, head, and lace dissappeared, lowering my appearance score.
