Description
Paw Paw Brewing Company was founded in 2010 by Paw Paw resident and Western Michigan University alumnus, Ryan Sylvester. What began with four brewing mainstays, St. James Mild Amber, Jake’s Vanilla Bean Porter, 2 Paws IPA, and Black River Oatmeal Stout, has grown to over one hundred unique recipes and distribution of nearly 20 brands throughout the state of Michigan.
In February 2019, Paw Paw Brewing Company moved into their new taproom at 780 South Gremps Street! The pub (formerly at 929 E. Michigan) has matured from a tight 800 sq ft space into 6,000+ sq ft adjacent to the brewery’s over 10,000 sq ft production space. In addition to a sizable stage for performances and more room for patrons, the new location features a full-service kitchen, allowing the company to explore new and exciting food offerings. The new facility also offers a private rental space available for meetings, private events, and parties.
Co-Owners Ryan Sylvester and Eric Pearlstein are “humbled and overjoyed at the opportunity to further invest in the Paw Paw community.” This venture would not have been possible without the support of our community, patrons, and PPBC family. Thank you!

Keg at Brewdog Paddington, 13/07/22. Mahogany brown with a thin beige head. Nose is vinous, tarte berry fruits, sharp red berry esters, funk. Taste comprises tangy red berries, funk, damp oak, fruit balsams, straw, just a hint of over ripe banana. Medium plus body, fine carbonation, semi drying close with a spike of acidity. Decent well balanced sour.

12 ounce bottle from Jim's Foodmart, 6/20/20. Uh oh, gusher! Thought I'd open this cause, well, its a weekend away. Hazy amber large frothy tan head, good retention. Aroma of toasted malt, caramel, floral and citrus hops. Taste is candied citrus, pine, toasted malt. Medium bodied, moderate lingering bitterness. Decent. Old school.

Mixed six from Paw Paw. Amber colored pour, with a foamy head, but better behaved than the gusher from the KUA. A little bit of haze is there. The head is showing a few loose particles. The hops suggest a slight pine and stone fruit nose. Taste starts out pretty malty and hearty. Then the hop asserts itself, building up some solid American hop bitterness, then some resin and a hint of citrus and mint. Very well played. More of an American Pale Ale to my mind, except maybe for the malt load.

Bottle purchased at Paw Paw Brewing in November as “K.U.A.” The bottle gushered as I open the cap. Pours with a large chunky head of foam. Hazy amber color suggests this is lightly filtered, if at all. Light citrus and a bit of pine in the nose. I get a suggestion of lychee nuts. The taste is rather light in both hop and malts. A little bit more of the pine starts to come through. The pine and bitterness do become stronger as I work my way down the bottle. Unfiltered yeast does come through in the palate toward the end. But there are no dregs at the bottom of the bottle. Some bitter aftertaste is noted.

12 oz bottle from Paw Paw mixed six. Pour is amber, almost brown. Surprising color for an IPA. One finger wide head. The nose shows some brown ale malts, and more of an English hop smell. I would almost think this could be a mislabeled amber ale. But the taste does have a more pronounced note of northwestern hops. still some earthy English hop note, but it's now overwhelmed by bitterness. Unfiltered, leaving a residue of yeast on the bottom. I poured the yeast dregs in, and got a slight extra note of cocoa. Interesting brew.

12 oz bottle from P.P.B. Nice malty sniff under the cap. Pours a dark amber color under a finger's width of foam. Malt nose subsides once it's in the glass. Taste is pretty decent; though the confines of the style wouldn't let it be anything spectacular. Sweetish malt, but there's a side of bitter American hops keeping it range. A likeable house beer.

Taster at Paw Paw. Slightly hazy Pilsener color, head goes away very quickly. Definite hop smell to it. Not as overwhelming as the description might suggest. A big hop note of course, but it’s in line with a German hop profile.

Draft taster at Paw Paw. Deep brown color, still a scrum of foam on top of the taster, Not much smoke in the nose, but there is a note of spicy rye malt. A note of smoked Gouda in the palate, though. And the smoky note gets bigger the further down I go. Plenty of lacing on the bit of foam for a taster sample.

12 bottle carryout from Paw Paw. I accidentally got two bottles with different label designs, and this first one looks like the older one. But no date can be found. I've had a couple vanilla porters, and this is very similar: nice nose of vanilla, along with coffee roast malt, no harshness. Opaque blackish body with a thin brown layer of foam. Taste has some bitterness that may actually be overdone malt roast. Harsh mouthfeel subsides after the first swallow. This just sat down more like a homebrew. Well, I can check out the other bottle later and see if this is just an off batch. The second, newer bottle, is more like it. Warm milk chocolate small once poured into a shaker. Fuller cocoa and milk sugar taste. Much less off flavor. I've notched this one up a few spaces.
