Description
The building known as the “Old Brewery” was first completed in 1898 and was used to brew Petoskey Sparkle beer until 1915. According to a 1973 article in the Petoskey News, the Petoskey Brewing Company was originally owned by Frank and Garrett Fochtman, A. Bremmeyr and John Zaiger, who also acted as the Brewmaster.
Since closing in 1915, the brewery building has served as retail shops, as warehousing and perhaps even as a goat barn. It wasn’t until 2012, under the new ownership of and complete renovation by Patrick Dowd and Lou Gostinger, that beer once again flowed within the walls of the “Old Brewery”.
Please come visit and witness a part of great Northern Michigan history.

16 ounce can into tulip glass, canned on 11/2/2016. Pours lightly hazy deep reddish brown color with a 1-2 finger dense and fluffy light khaki head with good retention, that reduces to a nice cap that lingers. Nice spotty soapy lacing clings on the glass. Aromas of caramel, brown sugar, toffee, dough, and toasted brown bread; with lighter notes of vanilla, chocolate, cocoa, coffee, nuttiness, and roast/toasted earthiness. Very nice aromas with good balance and complexity of dark/bready malt and light-moderate coffee notes; with good strength. Taste of big caramel, brown sugar, toffee, dough, and toasted brown bread; with lighter notes of vanilla, chocolate, cocoa, coffee, nuttiness, and roast/toasted earthiness. Light herbal hop and roast bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of caramel, brown sugar, toffee, dough, toasted brown bread, vanilla, light coffee/nuttiness, and roast/toasted earthiness on the finish for a while. Very nice complexity, robustness, and balance of dark/bready malt and light-moderate coffee flavors; with a good malt/bitterness balance, and zero cloying sweetness after the finish. Medium carbonation and body; with a very smooth and moderately creamy/bready mouthfeel that is nice. Zero warming alcohol for 7.3%. Overall this is a very nice English brown ale. All around nice complexity, robustness, and balance of dark/bready malt and light-moderate coffee flavors; very smooth and easy to drink. Was hoping for more coffee, but there is a solid amount; and you do get some donut/frosting flavors as well. Really well done base brown ale to top it off. A very enjoyable offering.

Tastes just like a raspberry ice cream cone as advertised. A very enjoyable offering.

On tap at MBGSF 2016. Pours an orange gold with a white head. Citrus aroma. Lots of citrus flavor as well, caramel, quite flavorful and tasty. Can’t say I noticed any barrel aging.

Pint can poured to lager glass. Nice gold color. Aromatic, malty nose. Taste has hints of the typical bland industrial lagers turned out by the big Brewers, but just hints. The body was full with a balance of hops and malts. Overall, I was pleasantly surprised.

Alcohol is very well hidden with only a light warmth lingering after the finish. Overall this is an excellent DIPA. Can. Clear, deep amber/ruby body. Fizzy white head, rapidly diminishing to nothing. No lacing. Aroma of sweet malts, candy sugar, caramel. The flavor is moderately to heavily sweet and lightly bitter. It finishes moderately sweet and lightly bitter. Thin to medium body, watery texture, moderate carbonation. I like a malty sweet beer, but this is more sugary sweet than anything else. Just a hint of dark fruits — plum, cherry, raisin. And no hint of earthy Belgian yeast. Its thin body doesn’t help.
