On tap at the brewery. Muddy orang-brown body, thick cream head. Earthy, toasty aroma with nice sweetness. Creamy palate, with lots of brown sugar and toast, accentuated by light peat. Long, bitter, earthy hops finish. I detected a hint of apple, too. Alcohol is warming but not overbearing. Average complexity. This beer sipped nicely after a long day in a bog and cedar swamp.

On tap at the brewery. I liked this one better than the subpar Altbier. Light golden body, thin off-white head. Grassy hops complemented sufficient bready malts. Not too sweet. Light lemony characteristics, but I didn’t pick up any cookie dough (which I love to find in a dortmunder). Quaffable.

On tap at the brewery. I was not a fan of this one at all. Medium brown body, thin buff head. Light, grassy nose with subtle breads and toast. Thin, wispy malt body delivered little malt depth, and finished with a shot of grassy, bitter hops. Poorly balanced. There was really nothing here to grip.

2004 draught at MBG Fest. Pours a light brownish copper with some dark yellows. Small fizzy head, rapidly disipating. Aroma has nuts, caramel, dry toffee and some earthiness. Flavor is lightly malted, tending towards a dryness boosted by the hops. Lightly bitter hops impart an earthiness, but towards the end, there is a quick clean, sugary/caramel flavor and then the beer ends. Very pleasing experience, solid beer. I enjoyed the lack of any hugely bitter hops, a soft lightly sweet malt and a nice clean finish. Medium to medium light body, slightly watery. Great stuff.
