Description
Housed in a complex of 17th and 19th century rustic farm buildings on a 38-acre estate, the Lurgashall Winery is a family-run business specialising in fruit wines and meads. However, inside, it's anything but rustic, being self-contained with fermentation, maturation and bottling vats, and modern, high quality equipment in a sterile bottling room and fully equipped laboratory โ€“ all elements of the process that will be learned about when taking a tour around the facility.

Lurgashall has come a long way since it began production in 1985 and produced a thousand bottles. Annual production is up to half-a-million bottles and the visitor experience is thriving.

With 10 meads, nine fruit liqueurs and nine fruit wines, including the delicate Rose Petal Wine and more decisive Silver Birch Wine, there's no monoculture here. Visitors will find out about the way that time-honoured recipes are followed as closely as possible, in the continued quest for authentic flavours.

A yellow mead with a strong aroma of clove honey, woody notes, like wet wood, and aniseed. In mouth, a smooth sweet honey with nice aniseed notes, quite smooth, warming alcohol. Interesting mead. Bottle from LCBO vintage, about 1 year old. Tasted Feb. 5 2011.

bottle at Fort Wayne tasting courtesy of thedm and hotstuff - Pours golden and very leggy with a big, sweet honey aroma. The flavor is very sweet honey. The spices are really mild, barely discernible to me (maybe too many big beers before tasting this mead tonight). Thereโ€™s nothing outstanding here, but itโ€™s tasty and fairly enjoyable.

Pours pale lemon color with no head. Aroma is scotch. Full bodied with zero carbonation. Mild heat. Sweet - not exactly honey. Some oak. Very mellow and smooth and the scotch is an excellent note. Finishes on a tastey honey note.

Bottle at Spuyten Duyvil, New York
Light blond color. The aroma is strong, very flowery, with light rubber too. Quite sweet but not syrupy, with a clear alcohol warming feeling, honey flavor, a bit spicy. Not complex but not too bad.

From a bottle at the Vintage Estates. Sweet off aroma. Overly sweet on the palate. Not bad compared to other Lurgies Iโ€™ve tasted. Bready wine finish. What can be said, this stuff is wine.
